How bad will a Phenom II x55 bottleneck an Nvidia 680? - Page 2

I think the 955 is AMD's best processor to date! IMO

I had to overclock my 955 to 4.1ghz to eliminate a bottleneck with a reference GTX 580 at stock speeds. A 7970 or GTX 680 is significantly more powerful.

There is no way you can prevent a significant bottleneck using a 955 and a 680! My estimate is 10fps at 1080p running the 955 at 4Ghz! ! At 1440 x 900 the bottleneck will be 20FPS.

I was dropping 8fps with 6870's in crossfire with my 955 at 4.0Ghz! This compared to a 2500K that I had at stock frequencies running next to it.

The 680 will be running at GTX 570 levels with the 955 and a good overclock! I did a lot of testing with this chip but I do not have any of my data to back it up after i erased it cause I felt it would never be useful!

My bottleneck was on average! metro 2033 was much worse, Hawk was slightly better!

PC's run at their best when they are balanced but it's your hard earned money and it's your choice. To the original question I ask this...why would you want to spend $500 to find out and if it does then what?

Because the vast majority of PC games are still GPU limited unless you're running unreasonably slow CPU/RAM.

I agree! A 955 is a great chip, just give it what it can handle! At 4.0ghz, a GTX 570 or an HD 7870 will be the top cards!

Both are significant improvements to a 5850!

Thanks everyone. I think I will grab the monitor and a 680... and then do new build around the i5 2500k in year or so, and maybe sli a second 680 if I see fit.

The noly reason i dont do a whole new build right now is simply because the title selection doesn't warrant it.. I'm only playing Skyrim and BF3 right now, and Ill probably play Diablo III, but I dont see alot of games coming out that would be a paradigm shifter if-you-will in terms of performance. So, I say, let the bottleneckin begin!

Also, I'd really appreciate it if someone could point me to a comprehensive guide on how to overclock the 955 BE. I'm guessing it is unlocked right? since its a BE?

Skyrim is notoriously single-thread limited
BF3 eats my 2600k @ 4.7GHz alive without difficulty when I'm running a single 7970 @1250/1750 with high settings, and while that nets me 90-120 fps depending on situation and CPU load, it's still indicative of how much CPU power you need to feed a card like the 680 for optimal performance.

How does BF3 eat an i7 2600k @ 4.7 ghz + (1) 7970 OC'ed? You must be playing on Ultra, Im wondering at what resolution?

How do I play with a single 5850 + Phenom II on HIGH @ 1080p just fine... I don't lag at all no matter how intense it is.

This. I did an overclock with my 955 to 4.047 and with my 580 at 900mhz core. You should be definitely fine with a 680. Ultra settings and mods will be your bottleneck on this cpu but would still be playable. biggrin.gif

That's at mostly high settings, and my settings are almost optimal for 120 fps thumb.gif
BF3 still eats quite a bit of CPU-power though, you're most likely having some drops below 50 fps with a Phenom II X4 wink.gif
