Server for Real Time Video Encoding - Page 2

What software?

I would check if Intel QuickSync is supported. However, I would read up on multi-stream performance of hardware acceleration as well.

Hmmm.... not sure what supports hardware acceleration for Linux.

If there are not any, then just get the CPU with the most cores/clocks.

In wiki I saw that Quick Sync is not currently supported on Linux, so that not helping me smile.gif

so now what is better? Xeon, i5, i7 or CPU with many cores (maybe phenom or opteron)

i think for your budget, i would look at a 2600k rig or an IB rig with a z77 and i7-3770k cpu.. or buy a second hand refurbished server with dual xeons perhaps smile.gif

16 simultaneous streams being encoded in real-time are not going to happen with $1,000 because it just won't even happen on one socket. You're best off at least doubling the budget and looking into dual 1366 boards/servers like stubass suggested. I don't think dual quad cores will even cut it. You'll need dual hex cores. How is the encoding program going to buffer what's coming from satellite, as well? Linux can do basic video encoding, but it's very lacking compared to the tools you can get [for free] for Windows.
