...because they do. DVD have life-expectancy ratings... and in reality, it turns out to be MUCH less than projected.

Pick up a DVD-R from 5-10 years ago and you might notice spots of discoloration.

Tape is read/write... just like any cassette tape. However, it is sequential being a long piece of plastic.

Tape is for enterprise... not home user.

Here at my Job we back up to different types of tape mainly LTO and VX-8. If anything happens we can restore a particular file or all the data on it.

RD1000 (Dell brand) or RDX is much better then these tapes.
Now tapes have definitely come along way over the past decade or so, but the drives themselves cost so much most of my clients we have been deploying an RD1000 backup rotation as the drive itself is a bit cheaper. But the physical media is a bit more expensive. However the RD1000 has better access times as it's truly just an 2.5" drive inside of a robust enclosure.

lachen.gif at the people that thought they could use these as your everyday storage drives. lachen.gif

If someone sold me a used Tape drive, I'd use this smile.gif Would cost a lot less then picking up a ton of hard drives, because I have data I only need to backup once. If a drive dies, I'll have a copy. But it's not data I access on a regular basis.

I'm a hoarder of data, nothing wrong with that. And if I can get a deal on a drive, $25 for 1.6Tb is pretty darn good. I've always looked at these and thought to myself "Why", with one eyebrow up. Not anymore.

Addition: When I first woke up and read this, I thought tape was re-inventing itself to be stickier tongue.gif

Thank god somebody said this!

The sequential nature makes it less appealing, but it is good if you (more likely a company) have large files to store. Although...I suppose it could make a good temporary cache (such as when you are rendering video footage) tongue.gif

Very interesting, but I would personally worry about the tape breaking. You can, ironically, tape tape together...but the idea of it being written for computer usage doesn't make it very easy, especially if you are writing a large contiguous file. XD
