Sure, you throw in a few bells and whistles here and there, but don't force people to have to relearn how to use a piece of software they've used for years. If you MUST introduce functional changes for some reason, introduce them gradually.

A proven model does not equal a modern, optimal, or efficent model.

With all UI design, there comes a point when you cannot just add features. It sometimes requires forcing users to adapt and relearn.

If anyone has done any UI design, you would know it is not that easy to balance functionality, intuitiveness, and ease-of-use.

But there was absolutely nothing wrong with the Tool Menu, replacing it with the ribbon menu, like they did in MS Office was a huge error! (IMHO)

When you cost corporations and people millions Billions of dollars to retrain staff and cause people to lose time (which is money too), to relearn or to become re-certified, it's not just annoying, it's a bad move, no matter how you slice it or dice it...

Sure it's not easy, but you have to examine the end product and determine if it is better than the previous product too!

Finally, when 4 out of 5 of your customers are saying HELL NO, then you had best listen up, definitely! To me Microsoft has become completely disconnected with the consumer....

Just saying...

Ugh, again with the businesses won't like Windows 8 argument. No one is forcing businesses to upgrade. Windows 8 is a more consumer oriented OS than a business one. Businesses that can use the benefits of Windows 8 will upgrade, those that can't, won't upgrade. Simple as that.

Also, when did 4 out of 5 customers say hell no? Maybe you should actually read the source before arguing something.

Windows 8 CP usage stat -- in 22.5% the Explorer ribbon is expanded (closed was the default) and kept that way.

CLOSED is default. Have you ever considered the fact that perhaps, oh I dunno, maybe people didn't notice that feature was there? If it was open by default and 4/5 people closed it, then it'd be a different story.

I don't mind this. However, I will never use it as I won't be using Windows 8 due to Metro.

I don't have to go to CLI or enable additional file fields to do certain searches.

Right behind Duckie here.

Most of the complaints with anything Microsoft lately are people saying "ohh I hate XYZ" and then having literally not a single reason as to why.

Not I don't care... I actually dislike it ever since I saw it on Office 2010... it's quite disturbing to use it and very confusing + too many clicking to open up some tab.

<3 the ribbon... Forces coherency throughout various programs and menus.

I've yet to see a problem with Windows 8. The only thing that has changed is that there's a giant start menu as opposed to a small pop-up menu.

Agreed. I love the addition and having it minimized by default is the perfect implementation of it. Now, about that start menu...

Nah, I don't see the whole copy Apple thing in this. Other things yes i would agree but in windows 8 I see them trying something completely different and at the end of the day is still a consumer preview that (the only thing the article actually tells us) Microsoft is indeed keeping an eye out for things in order to find out what works and what doesn't. I highly doubt that Microsoft is going to let the complaints fall on deaf ears, after all that and bugs are why they give us these previews for free (read: our data) isn't it?
