[CNet] Best Buy feels Amazon squeeze, to close 50 big-box stores - Page 19

Seriously, I stopped shopping there years ago due to their horrible customer service.
I bought a $299 printer with 3 year service plan, which died a year later.
When I tried to return it, they no longer carried the printer I bought, and they tried to force me into taking a $199 printer, which didn't have all the features the printer I bought had. ( Printer, Fax, Scanner )
After 3 HOURS of yelling and screaming with the manager ( Yes, their manager was yelling and being rude ) eventually they realized I wasn't going to take the $199 model, and finally gave me the $299 printer all bitter about it, which is in THEIR TOS of what they're supposed to do.
Haven't shopped there since, I won't even step foot in there on Boxing Day.
For the record, Best Buy isn't feeling the Amazon squeeze, they're feeling the Best Buy Squeeze.
Overpriced Products + Uninformed Pushy Sales People + Bad Customer Service = Recipe for Disaster.

And this is really the issue isn't it.

If what a lot of people are saying was true walmart would be hurting. Because , besides groceries, everything you can buy from them you can buy online from amazon. Walmart isn't hurting because they understaff (its true) and they dont have people trying to sell you something every 5 minutes.

Best Buy has some of the worst customer service in the business and pushy floor reps (used car salesmen) This is the exact same reason circuit city went bust.. Their pricing wasn't competitive and they had pushy floor people trying to sell you crap you didn't need or want.

And LOL at those links to 500 to 1100 HDMI cables.. some of the reviews are SPECTACULAR.

I dont mind visiting best buy to purchase things. Problem is that things are already overprised a lot and if you include tax, its just insane. The other problem is that they do not keep products i sometimes would like to see in store. If i wanted to purchase online, ill just use newegg or amazon where there is usually no tax, not really overprised and sometimes free shipping.

I wanted a TV before and it cost 499 on amazon. With Amazon, it was free shipping and no tax. With best buy, they did not have it in store so i checked online. Cost online was 529, with tax being around 40 dollars and shipping going 80 dollars. Even if best buy price matched, which they sometimes give me a hard time, I saved over 100 dollars by choosing amazon. Unless bestbuy lowers price, or does something to give a nice discount to be a little bit more competitive regarding price, wont be long until they are going to disappear.

Best buy can't compete in price, but they don't need to. There are plenty of people ready and willing to pay more for the privilege to talk to someone who knows what they are talking about. The problem is the person who knows what he is talking about usually doesn't work at best buy. Oh there are plenty of BB employees who actually care and know their stuff, but when they are standing right next to 3 or 4 bozos...

I think they would do better with less retail stores and improve their online business. Less over head costs with more hot deals online.

I'm convinced some of those reviews are made up by Best Buy stuff, they must be fake, I mean, can stuff like this be real? This is an $1100 cable this dude is going on about...

I have this friend who is way into computers and AV stuff - he even has like an MCSE and A+ and stuff, which is totally braggable. His home system is totally boss, but I need to compete with him. I told him I bought this cable and it made my picture really, really POP. (I use it with a Playstation 3.) The blacks looked so black, like black like the night sky. The whites were such a bright white I couldn't believe it.
He came over with his multimeter and measured the cable. 0.00 VDC! Needless to say he was impressed with my technical prowess for picking up such an amazing cable. He said it's super-conductive so there won't be any loopback or ghosting. I said "I know." It was pretty awesome.
What's great about it: More useful than one year at a California Community College.....
What's not so great: but more expensive too. You get what you pay for.

Walmart is great because they have great prices, friendly staff, and like you said, no one is ever in your face pushing stuff on you. It's comparing Apple's and Oranges, but even Wal-Mart's electronics section is decent, and I've yet to go in there and had people forcing me to buy anything.

Wal-Mart will return almost ANYTHING within the time frame and a receipt, and it's always hassle free.

If Best Buy took a page from WalMart's customer service, people wouldn't hessitate to shop there. After my experience I couldn't shop at Best Buy again knowing that if something ever went wrong, it'll be too much of a hassle to get things resolved.

My local Walmart has really crappy customer service. No matter what time of the day or how many customers are in the checkout lanes, there is never more than 3 cashiers open. No self scan service either. So if you happened to be there (oh say) Friday evening, be prepared to wait over 30 minutes just for a jug of milk. People blatantly ignore express lane limit and cashier does nothing to discourage, I saw someone push a cart really piled to the brim with food and clothes in a 10-items only lane.rolleyes.gif

OTOH they do get great prices. Recent;y I've picked up a lot of LEGO sets that were marked down over 70% off regular price, and flipped them on Bricklink for a quick $10 profit a set. I don't buy meat or milk there, they taste funny. I get em at a local grocery store that has its own butcher shop and meat are never stored frozen biggrin.gif

Yup, I used to work there and at my store, they started purposely understaffing sometime around 2009. Which is funny, because you'd expect a company that made $23 billion in net profit for fiscal year 2009 would be able to cough up a little extra change to at least keep the front end staffed. But of course they wouldn't do that, CEOs and shareholders > customer service.

Lol, Geek Squad.

"300$ Tune Up Service For Your Computer" sign right on their desk.

"Make it up to 400% FASTER!"

The sign says.

I laugh and walk away.
