2700K - 5ghz - 1.46v - ?? - long term okay? Or try and source a lower volt chip?

Thread Starter
I recently completed a 2700K build and for various reasons, I ended up swapping my first CPU for a different one...

The first 2700K I had did 5.0ghz at 1.40v 15 hour stable. I was very happy with this as the temps were really really good but I messed something up on my motherboard (different thread) and erroneously took that rather sweet chip back and exchanged it (thinking my problem was the CPU).

Now I've got a new 2700K that needs 1.46v to be similarly stable (15hr Prime95 Blend) but my temps are, obviously, much higher (maxing around 85C in a 23C room whereas before they would only hit 75C).

For what it's worth, I'm running an offset based overclock so during non load times, it's running at 1.6ghz at around 1.11v; this has made it a little easier to stomach but I keep kicking myself for letting go of that 1.40v 5ghz chip I had before.

So what I'm wondering and since I'm pretty stoked with the way my system is running, is this:

Should I try and buy another 2700K and hope for lower 24/7 volts or just stick with the offset overclock I've got? Is 1.46v really pushing into worrisome territory for a 2700K that's a "daily driver" type rig (mostly video work and gaming)?? I mean to say, it's not a hobby machine so I'm looking for the maximum overclock that I can "set and forget"...since I can't really afford to be using the rig for weekly experimentation.

I've read all sorts of things all over the internet regarding volts on the 2700K, some which would indicate that my overclock is too hot and others that seem to treat it as no big deal.

Another option available to me would simply to get a better water cooled setup (currently using a heavily modded H100) as I know I could easily shave a minimum of 5/6C off of my load temp of 85C. But then again, that load temp is something that my daily use would never approach so I'm not sure if I should just forget about it and use my existing chip at 1.46v daily or take a chance on buying a new one that's better (or that might end up being worse?) ...

Anyway ... any thoughts would be appreciated.

.j.

I dont think that 1.46 is all that bad, especially for air cooling. My personal preference is water cooling. Taking that out of consideration, first you should kick yourself for selling that 1.4 @5 chip, and then if you have the spare change (i wish i did) buy a second chip in hopes for lower voltage OC. check around on OCN marketplace, I think I saw one over there that had some good OC stats.

Unless you are folding you are fine. I have same voltage for my 2500K for 5 months now. No problems.

I wouldn't worry about it. There are plenty of people on here that have been running 1.5v and have been since SB came out. As long as temps are fine the chip should be as well.

1.46v isnt that bad 24/7, but I wouldnt be happy with 85C 24/7. Try keep it under 80C if you wanna run it 24/7

I hear you.

And no... it's only hitting 85C when I do my stable stress test (which generally I only run for 15 hours and which is used as a long term gauge that everything else *normal* that I use my machine for will be peachy). Daily, in normal use, doing video rendering and gaming and what not, the machine very rarely breaks 61C (I periodically check my Coretemp logs after a couple days up time and normal use).

Even heavy, long edit renders in Sony Vegas Pro just barely scrape 70C and I only do those periodically and as I have video projects.

...

Otherwise, thanks to the others who commented.

For now I think I'm simply going to sit on this set up for a few months (if I can hold my OCD in check that long) and then get something like an XSPC Raystorm kit to replace the H100 with. To the H100's credit, though...it's turned out to be a pretty snappy little kit with a few tweaks. But I'm sure a good full water loop will bring that 85C Prime95 temp down to around mid 70's or just a shade higher. The same H100 kept my former, 1.4v 5ghz chip at 74C max, and easy at that, but this new chip, needing 1.46v+ is a whole different gig. It's crazy how the volts will blast the heat up so quick.

The offset overclock thing is pretty cool too, though. It's a degree of peace of mind, anyway to know that at idle, the VCORE will back off to something crazy low like 1.112v (which it's currently sitting at while I'm typing this)... so I'm gonna def stay with the offset thing. Idle temps are just stupid, generally being (literally) only 8C above ambient.

Right now, in core temp I'm looking at all four cores and two of them are actually reporting 4C *below* ambient while the other two cores are about 5C *above* ambient (which I guess is why the overall average at idle that core temp reports is around 8C above ambient).

Here's a screeny of what idle looks like while just typing and crap; pretty crazy if it's to be believed:

700

...

Should I start Prime95, it would immediately kick up to 5.0ghz @ 1.46v and temps would be in the low 80's within 10 minutes. LOL ...

Which is fine for now, I suppose. Better cooling later ...

Thanks again for the comments.
