GTX680 an 'imposter?'

So, here's the bottom line. The GTX 680 is not a high end GPU. But it's being sold for the price of a high end GPU and that very likely makes it hugely profitable..

Is Nvidia's GeForce GTX 680 an imposter?

Anyone agree with the article? Nvidea must be raking in the $$$. I can see how it makes sense to make a card that is great at gaming because that's where the money is, but to price it at 499?

I'd buy it at 499 but with all the hype it costs 800$ in my locale (same country where it is manufactured)... which is more than I want to spend on a gfx card.

And where are the price drops? Seems both amd and nvidea are happy to price fix.

Sounds like they are using the fact that you have very few graphics chips available in your area to jack up the prices
post #4 of 106
Maybe I'm missing something. But if it's a mid-range graphics chip then what's considered high-end from Nvidia that can be bought right now?
i think its pretty clear what nvidia did. we all know GK104 is a mid range chip that they threw into the high end for whatever reasons they have. my guess is GK110/100 was too complex or expensive to put on 28nm at the moment, so rather than another fermi debacle they just did what they could to compete at the moment.

Exactly.

@ thread starter

its a mid-range sold as high-end, its even in the name GK104 vs GF104/GF114 460gtx/560gtx TI..

But since GK104 rivaled AMD's "high-end" 7970, they might as well slap a 680gtx name on it so it will look even stronger rolleyes.gif lol

And this mid-rage GK104 shows its weakness in direct compute/cuda/openGL stuff.. just like older GF104/GF114..

I can get 2 gigabyte gtx 560ti's and overall still be 200$ cheaper. Better move? ATM i'm mainly playing bf3 and folding. Bit off topic I guess but even the gtx 580 hasn't dropped a dollar.

I only play at 1080p. For 30$ more can get 2GB zotac version.

Sorry i'm taking the thread OT but I'm depressed that my rig isn't complete thanks to waiting for kepler.
