[BW] BlackBerry maker to cede most consumer markets

Struggling BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. said Thursday that it will cede most consumer markets after failing to compete with flashier touch-screen phones such as Apple's iPhone and models that run Google's Android software.

Instead, RIM said it will return to its roots and focus on business customers, many of whom prefer BlackBerrys for their security. RIM has had limited success trying to enter consumer markets in recent years, and RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said a turnaround required "substantial change."

"We plan to refocus on the enterprise business and capitalize on our leading position in this segment," Heins said. "We believe that BlackBerry cannot succeed if we tried to be everybody's darling and all things to all people. Therefore, we plan to build on our strength."

Also Thursday, RIM said former co-CEO Jim Balsillie has resigned from its board. David Yach, chief technology officer for software, and Jim Rowan, chief operating officer for global operations, also are leaving in a management shakeup.

When iOS and Android develop stable and secure security standards, RIM might as well preemptively file for bankruptcy.

Its called the GOOD app ... hugely popular and a lot cheaper then a BB. Its starting to eat into BB coporate too. That, and its also possible to hook up an iPhone to a blackberry enterprise server.

iOS is a very secure OS. Yes it does have holes (many, especially in Safari) but it is 100% immune to viruses.

They are not talking about viruses when they say "security" for enterprise use.

If BB doesn't cater to the masses, how many purchase requisitions will company employees issue for a phone they don't want.

BB's are very popular in emerging markets (i.e. countries where telco's screw you hard on data charges), so for them to not tap into these markets is a mistake.

Speaking for this country specifically, it's gotten to a point where you're kind of surprised ppl don't own a BB (Think iPhone's in the US). I mean i chose to purchase BB instead of the Galaxy S2 for the simple fact that data bundles are insanely expensive.

I never liked BB's anyway, I always wondered what drove people to buying one of those.

Here at least in my company, every new company issued mobile device runs iOS (iPhones and iPads). I remember a few years back when the current iPhone was the 3G only version, everyone in the company uses a BlackBerry. Now ever since the 3GS came out, people here in my company started switching to iOS devices. Now all of the people i know who used to have a company issued Blackberry , now has an iPhone/iPad.
