Overclocking questions, 960T or the 965 with a choice of two boards :( - Page 5

I've looked into getting a tower which supports ATX / mATX motherboards, and I can get one pretty much the same as what I got now just taller (to fit the ATX boards)
Apart from the Asus M4N75TD what others are there that are adequate for mild overclocking...

I dont want to push the chip, just get it into the mid 3 ghz...

The tower I'm looking at is around £30, plus an ATX board....I'm looking at £70 give or take.
As I should be able to sell my CIT 1012 with its Foxconn board for about £60 ish.

Sorry that I''m possibly making this much harder than it is, but I'm fairly money cautious and with 3 kids and a family car money can be quite tight.

Personally I Would Get the Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 Motherboard and then probably the 960t if your going to unlock the 6th core and use for editing but i would go with the 965 because if your gaming you only really need 2-4 cores so you could get the 960t and not unlock the cores but the 965 has a higher clockspeed but it is totally up to you smile.gif

The 965 is very tempting, I dont do video editting, it will be mainly for the gaming side of things...

I know the FX series have a varied opinion, but instead of OCing the 960T as a quad, would I be better off putting the money to a 965 or FX 4170 (clocks at 4.2ghz). ?

who said a first real build is easy!?

EDIT:
Scrap that......I really want and need a 95w tbh.

It's okay no worries.

All of the microATX motherboards that run on the AM3/AM3+ socket (at least that I have found available for purchase currently) are going to be either 3+1 phase or 4+1 phase without heatsinks on the VRM's. This makes OC'ing higher TDP chips troublesome and not very safe. I mean, you should be fine with that 4+1 phase board so long as you get some heatsinks on it, but don't plan unlocking or OC'ing very high at all.

Now, I looked at ALL of the places you said you buy from on page #4 and this is the absolute best motherboard I could find for the money. I am aware you are on a budget but the board below.. to get something similar in quality you'll need to spend at least another 20 euros than what this is listed for. (at least on the sites you listed) I didn't check eBay, however.

Asus M4A79XTD-EVO

It has 8+2 power phase with the VRM's heatsinked. It will support Phenom II X6 processors with a bios flash as well. It is ATX, so you will need an ATX case too, of course.. hopefully this motherboard doesn't strain your budget too much and leaves you with a bit for a case. I highly suggest you aim for this board on your budget.

thanks for taking the time to look for that board....I'll be looking around for it elsewhere aswell...

Just so I know for the future (and also if that board + ATX tower + 960T is far out of budget) the VRM's that are needed to be cooled are these:

Look at these boards. The red square area.

Board 2: This board does not have heatsinks on the VRM's.

Exactly thumb.gif The VRM things I linked you to a page back come with an adhesive so you just stick them right on each of the squares and let them sit for a bit.

But.. the price of 12 euros for the mofset heatsinks plus the M5A78L board you are looking at is just about the same price as that one I found for you on Amazon, except the one on Amazon has double the phase count and already heatsinked for you. wink.gif

...of course you need a case with that one though.

Bonus,
Well I'm going to sit tight and wait to see what happens with my Foxconn board as its up for sale now, and if it goes for the right price and I can do the same with my tower I'll be sorted.

Just gotta wait a bit for my cashflow to increase a bit.

Thanks for everything you've done so far thumb.gif
