Overclocking questions, 960T or the 965 with a choice of two boards :( - Page 7

Concerned....yes

but I still want the option....lol

The price range of the M5A97 Pro is about my absolute limit (its pretty much double my mobo budget I had) but knowing that I can get it upto the high 3ghz range is a plus.....
After market cooling will be a future upgrade but I'll be happy with a 960T (quad) @ 3.5ghz on stock cooling, and anything more is an added bonus!

I hate having options, because I can never 100% decide on a particular thing....I think I'll just bite the bullet and buy the 960T + M5A97 PRO, that way it'll be too much hassle to change my mind.

You will be fine with that motherboard getting to 4GHz on a 960T. Getting it to 4GHz on the unlocked X6 might be a bit more difficult, but it is doable if you can do it at a low-ish voltage (1.4vish) thumb.gif You'll need a new heatsink of course like you've been saying!

I got 4GHz at 1.38v - it tops out at 47C on a $30 CM Hyper N-520.

I think that board will be fine there, the 960T doesn't need much voltage.

3875mhz (it's a 960t unlocked) at 1.408v with load. Hits 4.2ghz but needs crazy volts that my H100 just can't handle.

Dang it im back again....I've narrowed down 3 board that are in budget..

ASUS M5A97 PRO
GIGABYTE 970A-UD3
ASROCK 970 EXTREME4

Clearly all on the 970 chipset, and the gigabyte is 8+2 power phase, but i dont know motherboards that well, i know asus have core unlocker and that nice bios but not sure if the other two will allow me to unlock cores?

Little help? (again)

They all have a core unlocking function. The Gigabyte board also supports dual bios. Get whichever is cheapest, they are all solid boards.

If I had to choose I'd go with the Gigabyte one, but that's just me and my moar phase count rage speaking.

Well the Asus and the Gigabyte on Google Shopping are between £75-80 the ASRock is a 4+1 Power Phase and therefore no even considering it....- ebay as and when they are on auctions go for £50 (most are new).

Its where I got my OCZ MXSP 600w from which cost me £35 delivered (still has the plastic film on it...) UK Price new is £70 ish... Bargain!
