New Build, with some salvage

Thread Starter
Gents,

I'm building an i5 rig.

In my sig rig, I will be salvaging the TT Armor case, The Seasonic PSU, and all the hard drives.

The new build will consist of:
i7-2600k (You don't need a link to this...)
Crucial 128GB SSD Here
16GB Corsair DDR3 1600 Here
GTX 570 Here
Spinpoint 1TB Here
Undetermined Mobo (Help?!)

I'm taking the rest of my old sig rig, and turning it into a home server/guest gaming rig(?). I'm buying a Thermaltake case with a 430w PSU, which I think should be able to power this stuff. This thing is just going to be for streaming media, storing some files, and POSSIBLY hosting a web server. Here is the case Here

Now I considered making the upgrade to an X79 and i7 build, especially as I've been getting into video editing with 1080p footage. Do you guys think this is worth the ~$300 upgrade?

Now, once I add a board, this rig is going to come out to around 1100 dollars.

Do you guys see any opportunity for more bang for the buck?

I'm planning on 1100 dollars, may even consider spending 1200 if there is something worthy in it?

As always, I know you guys are masters of your craft (designing amazing rigs), and so, I humbly beg for your help in making sure I spend wisely smile.gif

As you can see, my sig rig has lasted me many years.. because I built it with OCNs help!

well if you wanted to save $100 you could get a 560ti instead of the 570. if you are planning on doing a lot of video editing keep the 16gb of RAM, if not then downgrade to 8gb to save money. With video editing and rendering, etc.. you should get a processor with hyperthreading so use the extra money you saved on the video card to get a 2600k or something.

as for the motherboard it depends on how much you are willing to spend. i always recommend the p8z68-v pro as it is a very popular board on this site, but it is over $200.

I went with GTX570 over the 560i because I can't stand not being able to play everything on Ultra. Especially since I've been getting really into DCS:A-10 which is a badass flight sim. I need a GPU that can eat that sim right up. the 560i worries me.

That board looks solid.

Hrmm.. I'm going to have to think long and hard over the 2600k ..

EDIT: Okay, gunna go with the i7 for the extra $110.

Should the 600w PSU I have still be good to power all that?

^ if you go for that build z68+2600K you will be limited for 4-core + 4 HT, for almost the same price as your choice you can go for corei7 3820+x79 and you will have an upgrade path to 6-core + 6 HT, plus your 16gb ram will be fully utilize at this platform being quad channel.

also this late april ivy bridge will come out and new corei7 3770K + z77 motherboard will be release, your current build in just one month will be phase out imagine that.

here is what i would say
Part list permalink / Part price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($299.99 @ NCIX US)

CPU Cooler: Antec Kuhler H2O 620 Liquid CPU Cooler ($61.99 @ Newegg)

Motherboard: ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($129.86 @ Newegg)

Memory: Patriot Signature 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($34.99 @ Newegg)

Memory: Patriot Signature 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($34.99 @ Newegg)

Hard Drive: OCZ Vertex Plus 240GB 2.5" Solid State Disk 15% off with promo code HARDOCPX328D, ends 4/3 ($161.75 @ Newegg)

Video Card: Asus Radeon HD 7850 2GB Video Card ($249.99 @ Amazon)

Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 ATX Mid Tower Case ($47.99 @ Microcenter)

Power Supply: OCZ 750W ATX12V Power Supply ($74.99 @ NCIX US)

Total : $1204.78 Shipped and after MIR $1098.o3

though i dont think you really need 16Gigs RAm buddy i really recommend you to stick with 8Gb RAM which is enough for Gaming, modern dont take RAM more the ~6GB rolleyes.gif yet the choice is yours and overall you got a
  1. better case
  2. a better cooler and a overall better performing GPU with Pci e 3.o and Direct X 11.1 support
  3. a lot better "modular" PSU which can handle a 7850 CF too biggrin.gif
  4. a cheaper SSD deal biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

Hope you like it thumb:
