Building Custom Loop

Thread Starter
Hi Guys,

I have been using the corsair H70 for my "water cooling" but folding with my 7970 it gets kind of toasty. I am wanting to know more information about building a custom water loop for my Ghost rig. The specs are in my signature if your wanting more information. I have never built a custom loop before and frankly have been kind of skid-dish to be honest.

Any information will help out greatly or if you could point me into the right direction.

Thanks

~jkbucksot

Biggest thing I can say, is do research on the parts until your eyes bleed and understand how they work. And also, what you might expect as far as problems go.

Your 7970 makes for a toasty rig due to the amount of power it is using, so just to cool that you mostlikely will need a 120.2 rad that has a decent thermal efficiency. If you want to add your CPU to the loop, I would also suggest doubling the size to a 120.4 or a 140.3.

A simple loop would be Res - Pump - GPU - Rad, but alot of people have watercooled 650Ds and you should take a look at some builds of this.

Good luck!

in my 10 years of watercooling experience, a 120x3 rad will cool your cpu and gpu sufficiently. that single rad will give you decent temps, but it won't allow for any overhead like adding another gpu or motherboard mosfet blocks. so my basic rule of thumb is to put the largest rad i can find in my rig and then go from there. using a 120x4 instead of a 120x3 will give you the added capacity for any future additions to your loop and still hold your temps in check. Tad toasty.... I would go for a 480 + especally if you want to use low rpm fans. GL biggrin.gif

Yup. I'm running with an i5-2500k at 4.9 GHz 1.44v and a 7970 at 1.2 GHz core/1525 Mhz core and 1.2v. both have acceptable temps with a single Black Ice SR-1 360. Highest my CPU went with 65c on prime95 and my card is at 50 with Furmark/Kombustor

that was when the temps outside were in the 80s a few weeks ago. my cpu idles at 25c these days compared to 30s so I think my prime95 temps should be in the 50s now.

80 F tongue.gif crazy for spring temps tongue.gif. Fans are at the 3:00 position on the controller so i'm assuming 70% of 1800 rpm (AP-15). Have 6 of them on the rad push/pull

4 NZXT 140mm case fans are at 70% as well.

So far from everything I have read, I have made a decision to go with EK Waterblocks for both my CPU and GPU. They are listed below:

CPU:

http://www.ekwaterblocks.com/shop/blocks/cpu-blocks/supreme-hf/ek-supreme-hf-acetal.html

GPU:

http://www.ekwaterblocks.com/shop/blocks/vga-blocks/ati-radeon-full-cover-blocks/radeon-hd-7xx0-series/ek-fc7970-acetal.html

I am going for a more stealth look for my case with the black and grey on the mobo as well as ram and psu. So fittings.... would I use 1/4" for these blocks? What would a good rad and res / pump be for this combo?
