Mass Effect - Running out of virtual memory?

Thread Starter
I've been having trouble with Mass Effect running out of virtual memory after playing for around 45 mins at a time. Here is the error code below:

189

I googled the error, but nothing definitive comes up. So far, I've used the Large Address Aware tag on the .exe file to allow more than 2GB of use in the memory, but still nothing works. Tips appreciated!

I didn't change anything with the pagefile when I installed Windows (figured it would know what's best). However, I did upgrade to 8GB from 4GB of RAM a couple of months ago.

I always disable page files due to these problems. With 3 or more GB of ram you can do with getting rid of it biggrin.gif

dont disable paging file the minimum you can set it witout being ignored by the heuristic in the os is 250 mb so set it to that!

I was under the impression that the page file was needed (and should only be disabled for SSDs)?

It can be disabled regardless of SSD. It just utilises the RAM more rather than the HDD. Since i got XP back in 2001 i have never had a pagefile and have had no adverse effects. smile.gif

Also it stops slow access to programs when it is using space in the pagefile. I am a techy too, so I wouldnt advise it if i didnt believe it to be safe thumb.gif

I disable the page file with my SSD, but I didn't know it was ok with HDDs.

But then I ran across this: http://lifehacker.com/5426041/understanding-the-windows-pagefile-and-why-you-shouldnt-disable-it

There is always something saying it will cause problems. I have used it this way for 11 years on XP, Vista and now 7 with no issues.

Even used Windows 8 with no Pagefile and it was fine. I know you lose the ability to save minidump information on crash etc, but who cares about that? Just make it so the PC doesnt auto reboot on failure and it will keep the error for you to write down anyway smile.gif

Edit: Just disable them all and see how the PC is on Mass effect, if the error is gone then its fine. Setting a minimum size PF will cause more problems if it is saying the system managed one is too small.

Edit edit: You will need to restart for effects to take place. tongue.gif

What do you mean to be ignored by heuristic?

It depends upon your workload whether or not you can get away without page file. If disabling page file causes problems, enable it.

Page file is a place holder if you start running out of physical ram. Better to have your active applications be in physical ram and still running than it crashing due to lack of total memory.

However, this Mass Effect error seems to be an game bug problem. You may have to reinstall the game again.
