Pushing my HX1000 To Hard?

First before you post please have a understanding of how this PSU is designed. It's not automatically enough because its 1KW. Its actually two 500w PSU's in a box. Bought it two years ago and this is the first SLi setup its ever seen. I have read about alot of folks having issues with these cards on this PSU.

That said, my worry is I may be overloading Rail1 which according to Corsair, runs the CPU/MB. That's where I have GPU2 480 connected. Rail2 takes care of my other (primary) 480 HDD's Etc.

Keep in mind, I will not be Overclocking the GPU's what so ever or running furmark and my CPU OC is 4.3GHz 1.3v on the i7 3820. I also won't be dropping a Hexa core in this setup until I get a different PSU (short on funds atm). My concern is, not blowing anything up as it stands now. I am concerned about reaching 500w on Rail1 or even worse exceeding it. So far its been stable running Heaven, Crysis 2, Far Cry 2 and such.

Thoughts and suggestions (especially those experienced with the HX1000 and 480 SLi) Greatly appreciated. Thanks wink.gif

What systems do the people that have been having problems run ?

The Core i7 3820 uses about the same power as the 2600K, Intel rated it at 130w TDP because it's an enthusiast platform, and since you have to buy your own cooler, and you will probably be overclocking it, I guess that is why they rated it at 130 w TDP instead of 95 w TDP.

Even if you consider that the GTX 480 can use 300 w at stock under some kind of synthetic test, your PSU has 40A per rail, that is 480 w.

The overclock on your CPU won't make it use more than 95w + 300 w + let's say 50 w for motherboard and RAM = 445 w. Even though there can be some degradation of the PSU over the course of two years, I think you are still ok considering that the GTX 480 will most likely use 250 w or less while gaming.

Systems that Ive read about having issues widely vary but there were alot of highly OC'd Gen 1 i7's sometimes with OC'd 480's, Water kits and god knows what all.

Real temp Reports ~140w for my CPU running Prime 95 Large FFT's. Obviously I wouldn't be pushing my CPU that hard gaming lol.

Gen 1 Core i7s are 45 nm chips, and presumably if on the X58 platform still have the PCIe controller off-die, the Southbridge is still the ICH10R (the same used on my motherboard), so right there the platform and CPU will use more power. And then overclocked GTX 480s use lots of power given the high leakage nature of the chip.

As to your CPU, have you used the reading points on your motherboard, that thing is loaded with reading points I've read, so that would be a more accurate way to tell how much power the CPU is using. In any case, Prime 95 is pushing it and using all 8 threads constantly, which is something that doesn't happen in normal usage.

That is something I thought about but I will have to purchase a new Multimeter. I had one back when I bought my old R2E/920 and wound up stepping on it and broke the thing redface.gif

I've been thinking about buying one too. It's about time now that I'm into overclocking for more than a year hehe.

Oh, I'll be joining you in the Core i7 3820 Club (well, it's still the overclock thread, but it acts like a club) thumb.gif, I have it on my desk, along with an Asus Sabertooth X79 and 16 GB Corsair Dominator 1866 Mhz, but still didn't have the chance to upgrade my rig. I still want to run a few benchmarks on my rig as it is to see the performance before and after.

I have been using HX1000 for 3 years or so for my i7 965 @ 4GHz with 2 graphics cards in SLI. Currently, the 2 cards are slightly overclocked GTX570s. And I once had 8800GTX SLI (which are power hungry monsters). I have no problem whatsoever.

I think you are connecting your 2 GTX480s correctly to the HX1000. Double check with my diagram below:-

Yep. That is exactly how I have it setup. IMO trying to run 2 480's on 1 rail as Ive seen some others do around the web is just PSU Suicide.

Not necessarily. It really depends on how big your rail is. My HX850 is a single rail rated at 83A. Runs my 580s at 935MHz (1.15v) and my 2600K @ 4.8GHz (1.425v) without a hiccup.

It's not all about the rail count, it's how much each rail is rated for.
