PROJECT:

90

Welcome to Project: SWITCH W A V E, my first foray into true water cooling!

I've always wanted to try out water cooling, and the desire has finally become strong enough for me to go full in. I've had my H50 for almost 2 years or more now, and while it served me well, I needed to do something new. I had originally thought I'd just get an RX240 kit, and mount the rad on the outside, but with my current case being a mid tower, it would involve me having to get a ventilated side panel, intake fans to help cool my GPUs, and just would up looking like a monster in my head.

Then selluminis suggested I look at the case he had used, and that sealed the deal. The NZXT seems to have it all! Everything I need to start water cooling, as well and tons of room for expansion for if/when I decide to include my GPUs. The unique design of the SWITCH 810 does seem to have everything for a hybrid build. (Some water cooled, some air cooled)

Here are the things I have found, and plan to get for this build. Please feel free to suggset different items, but please back it up with reasons, as well as links for purchase, since I'm trying to get as much from as little vendors as possible.

Buying these from newegg.com

CASE: NZXT SWITCH 810 Black

OPTIONAL FANS: 3 or 4 NZXT FX-140LB - Are these the same fans as supplied in the case?

PSU: Seasonic Platinum 1000W - I figure this will sufficiently power my rig now, and handle any upgrades I may throw at it in the next 7 years. wink.gif

Buying these from performance-pcs.com

WATER COOLING KIT: XSPC Rasa 750 RX240 - This should be enough for me for sow, since I'm just cooling CPU, right? I think the dual bay res helps for possible additions to the loop later, so better to start with.

ADDITIONAL FANS: 2x Ultra KAZE 3Ks - I have two of these already I plan to use here, but it the stock NZXT fans are phenomenal, I'm not opposed to using all NZXT, for a clean unified look. They are for the rad, however, and won't be seen unless the case is opened really.

BETTER TUBING: 6' PrimoFlex Pro LRT UV Blue - I chose 6' due to that being the same amount you get with the kit, and wanting to make sure I had plenty.

UV LIGHTING: Logisys 6" Dual UV Cathode Light Kit - Right now, the two 4" CCFL non-uv blue lights I have in my case clearly shine blue light all the way across to the other wall. I'm looking for a more subdued look that will definitely play well with the UV tubing and sleeving.

ACCESSORIES: MX-4 and Silver Kill coil - I've read that the kill coil is the easier 'set it and forget it' solution.

The plan:

450

I want to have all of the NZXT fans that come with the case to be used as exhaust in the top and rear. Then two additional NZXT fans as intake in front, and one inside on HDD cage, blowing towards GPUs. I plan on using my fan controller for the 4 UK3Ks on the rad, and the two font case intake fans to minimize routing of fan cables, as well as being able to control the fans closest to me. The rest of the fans I'll be putting on the supplied hub.

I'm also seriously thinking about sleeving the Seasonic. Normally I'd be worried about doing something to a brand new PSU, but with it being fully modular, I feel it's less worrisome just messing with the cables. I know some have said sleeving is a long and tedious task, but I have plenty of time at work to devote to the sleeving task. I think UV colors of white, blue (trying to match tubing and sleeving to the blues of my MSI P67-GD65), and maybe grey (to match the GPUs and PSU) and/or black.

Not sure about my SSD cables. Do people sleeve these as well? They would just require a slightly larger diameter, right? Either that, or I'll buy another black one, since I only have the one white that sticks out.

For reference, here is my case as of now:

Update 4-06-12 - Christmas in April! (Click to show)

450

450

450

450

450

450

And the current state of affairs:
450

Sadly, at this time I need to transform back into a human capable of dealing with the public for a few days of work. Once I'm over that tedious endeavor, I will report with more pictures. wink.gif
Update 4-17-12 - Laying out cable management (Click to show)
While waiting for my final tools for sleeving to come in, I decided to start calculating what I'll need for MDPC sleeve after I practice with Paracord. So, this is roughly what I've got:
14.5 inches for 4-pin molex to 2x FDD X 4 = 58 Inches
40.0 inches for 3x MOLEX X 4 =160
36.0 inches for 3x SATA X 4 = 144
26.0 Inches for 2x PCIe X 32 = 832
28.0 inches for 8-pin CPU X 8 = 224
26.0 inches for 20+4-pin Motherboard X 28 = 728

for a total of 2146 Inches which converts to 54.5 meters of sleeving. I then started seeing how much of a breeze it was going to build in this case.

Looks like everything is going to be a breeze to connect.
450

700

A little bit of a cluster bleep here. Think I should keep the PCIes where they are going through, or bring it down to the level of the motherboard and CPU? I think it looks less cluttered this way, but open to suggestions. smile.gif
450

And the back panel.
450

That's all for now! Stay tuned as I plan on sharing my adventures sleeving the one of the worst PSUs one could tackle as a first time sleeving project! biggrin.gif
Update 4-18-12 - Removal of front panel, and sleeving measurements and order organization. (Click to show)
I removed the front panel today, and decided to sleeve most of those cables as well, since it seemed a bit too easy to get it out, and it should come apart easy enough.

450

Looks like I should be able to gently pull on the wires while adding pressure somewhere in the connectors. I couldn't see a simple tab or anything. Gonna be pulling all of those little boards out to get at the connections properly. smile.gif
450
Not sleeving the USB 3.0, but will be sleeving the 2.0s, the SD card reader (which is just another USB 2.0), the LED switch, and the reset switch.
450

Power switch and power and HDD LEDs are going to be a bit easier. Maybe. I don't want to pull the switch apart, so I thought I'd be able to slide a piece of heatshrink all the way down as close as I can. This won't be seen, but it's there to hold the sleeve. smile.gif
450

Radiator is going to be a little tight, but I think it will work. Once some of the cables are sleeved, I'll get a better idea of how pliable and manageable they will be. Might wind up looking like a rat's nest. tongue.gif
450
450

So the revised list for measurements for sleeving, and all required heatshrink (both for practice and final product) is as follows:

14.5 inches for 4-pin molex to 2x FDD X 4 = 58"
40.0 inches for 3x MOLEX X 4 =160"
36.0 inches for 3x SATA X 4 = 144"
26.0 Inches for 2x PCIe X 32 = 832"
28.0 inches for 8-pin CPU X 8 = 224"
26.0 inches for 20+4-pin Motherboard X 28 = 728"

40.0 Inches for frnt panel connections X 4 = 160"
35.0 Inches for USB 2.0 headers X 3 = 105"

70 Meters of sleeve. (It actually adds up to 61 meters or so, but I want extra, but not too much extra. biggrin.gif)

At least 192 pieces of heatshrink for regular wires. I think that covers all of the front panel connectors, sans the ones I need the SATA shrink for. So I'm thinking 400 to be safe. smile.gif

plus one pack of SATA shrink

200 pieces of black Heatshrink for practice

I'm still thinking of just doing solid blue for all the sleeving, with matching blue heatshrink, but others have suggested black & blue sleeving with white heatshrink. I'm not really keen on that particular color scheme, though I would maybe do black and blue with respective matched heatshrink.

Still tossing ideas around, but want to make an order today. biggrin.gif

I have to also add that this case is a BREEZE to work with. Solid construction, easy disassembly of most areas, and strong quality connections and wires. smile.gif I'm having a blast!
Update 4-20-12 - Final orders placed, Lutro0 tool arrives, creative cable management (Click to show)

I was able to get my order in at MDPC-X.com the other day, and that should be here within a few weeks. biggrin.gif I also ordered the 2 meter model of the NZXT sring of white LEDs, and 4 NZXT 3 pin fan extensions.

Also, the Lutro0 Customs sleeving tool finally arrived!
338

So I'll finally be able to tackle some para cord if I want, or I can just wait until my MDPC order gets here, since I ordered extra shrink to use with the para cord. I'll probably still give it a little bit of a go with the para cord I have, and the crappy shrink, just to see how I do. smile.gif

I originally was going to use three of the stock fans in the top as exhaust, then two of the other fans I bought in the front as intake, set to their highest speed, and controlled with my controller. One other extra fan would be inside angled towards the GPUs and not controlled other than opening up and changing speed. The final extra fan was to be in the rear as exhaust, with the switch inside. This turned out to be too much of a hassle, and with the stock fans being pretty good, I've changed it some.

All of the extra fans will be used in the top and rear, as exhaust:
450
450
The third top one won't go in until after I'm building, and have the fan controller in place, and all wires run for it.

To control the rear fan easier, I ran the switch outside the case, and affixed it with a little velcro:
700
700

And I did something similar with the top fans:
450
450

Cable management is going to be a cinch with this case:
450

I'll be sure to add pics when my other orders come in!

UNBOXING VIDEOS!

With getting a new case, PSU, watercooling gear, and sleeving tools, I had the opportunity to make some unboxing videos. I launched a new channel on YouTube, in the hopes that I will continue to share unboxings, reviews, opinions, and other tech.gaming.computer related things!

So, I present my first unboxing on that channel! There is also an intro video and mini computer oom tour on my channel, so check those out as well!

SLEEVING!

I wanted to leave the last reserved spot for my adventures in sleeving. I was really interested in this idea after watching Lutro0's videos. He simplified everything, and explained most, if not all, of the snags and annoyances one may come across when sleeving. For that, I say thank you Lutro0!

So, I had heard about paracord and MDPC sleeve. Paracord being the cheaper, more readily available product, and MDPC being a little more expensive, while showcasing a different level of quality that is not to say better, but unique. wink.gif So I grabbed 100' of paracord to start. I had to wait a bit to get all of my sleeving tools in, but when I did, I was finally ready:

First practice with Paracord - 4-21-12 (Click to show)

450
450

The heatshrink that I wound up using (I didn't want to wait until my shipment from MDPC came, since I was really just doing this one cable for now.), was from some kit I bought about 6 years ago. It had a few different colors, and some was tube like, and others were flattened. I used the smallest diameter black, 5/32", and crudely cut them in half. I didn't care about the evenness, since I'm probably redoing them when the MDPC shrink comes. smile.gif

450
450
450

That tape worked rather well. It's a cloth tape for medical use. Had some in the medicine cabinet. wink.gif

I got the first one done with no problems, or at least with none too severe for me. wink.gif Then I messed up 3 times on the 2nd:
450

After that, all went smooth until number 7. But all in all, a great run, IMO! biggrin.gif

Half way done!
450
450
450

The finished product! Not too bad considering the crappy sleeve and first timer and all.
450

Mistakes in sleeving I was willing to live with for practice. smile.gif
450
Actually, the pin just wasn't fully inserted on the one! Still not perfect, but better! thumb.gif
450

Uneven shrink, but again, this was practice to get the feel of it. smile.gif
450

Overall, I was very happy with my results. I feel confident to handle the rest of my daunting task!

Peace,
Demented

I had begun practice when I got the first order of MDPC, since technically it was the second order I placed for more practice materials. I will say this. MDPC is a totally different animal when it comes to sleeving. You use a lot of the same techniques, but they have to be tweaked accordingly. Slowly but surely, I got the hang of it. I know the areas I still need to work on, and it's been a nice learning process.

Looks like an interesting build. Subbed.
I believe the fans included with the Switch 810 are actually FN-140RB fans.

If I could go back, I would definitely go for the raystorm kit over the rasa kit. Check it out, its worth it.

the block, pump, and rad are all better.

True except for the rad part. The radiators used in the Raystorm RX360 kit are the same as those used in the RASA RX360 kit.

the block, pump, and rad are all better.

Since this is my first time with water cooling, while I don't want to have to spend much more later, the initial price of the RASA RX240 is just more feasible for me at this time. Is the $70 increase from RX240 to the EX240 w/D5 pump really worth it? I see I could save the $12 I'm spending on different tubing, unless the XSPC tubing is still crap compared to the Primochill. If the tubing is better than the Rasa's tubing, then it boils down to the rad, compression fittings and pump being worth the extra cost. I liked the thicker rad of the Rasa RX240, but I'm willing to listen to reason if the Raystorm kit is better.

Honestly the tubing included with the kit is pretty suspect. I got some primochill stuff and right off the bat I could see it took better angles and was not ever so slightly discolored yellow like the rasa kit stuff was. I wouldve liked to do the build with compression fittings from the beginning, but instead used the barbs with the included hose clamps. The clamps are black so they do pretty much blend in, but its one of those little "cleanliness" things I notice.

I have the rasa kit, the pump is fine. The pump is pushing water through an EK 580 block, and ex360, rs240, and rasa block and the flow is great. The stock tubing is terrible, so you'll obviously have to replace those.

By the way, the rasa kit fans were recently shown to be incredible performers at their price. If you Google the fan name, the review (was on OCN) will show up.
