[Guru3D] MSI Radeon HD 7970 Lightning Review - Page 5

I think a lot of people fail to realize that the MSI 7970 Lightning is the most well built 7970 to date. It has by far the best power hardware and components of any card on the market, and MSI makes it very clear that you can do some amazing overclocks on this card.

The review seriously doesn't do this card justice. Remember, this is the EXACT MODEL of card that was used to hit 1800mhz core using LN2... No volt modding or tampering with the hardware. It was this card alone that got it there. You'd better believe that if you overclock, this card will be able to take much more abuse than your standard 7970, let alone any GTX 680 on the market.

If you want to overclock, drop a waterblock on this thing. Then we'll see which card is the king.

In BF3 GTX680 simply because Nvidia does much better with 4x MSAA. Dissable that which any normal human beaing would and HD 7970 will be faster. Think of it this way. HD 6970 is on pair with GTX580 when there is 0x MSAA. Look at the difference there. Its huge with 4x MSAA. Also 1190Mhz is too low. What are they thinking. Maybe they did not change fan speed at all and left it with Stock Fan Profile. Also just so people dont get worked up about this. Reference is $550. This is $600. With all beaing said and the features this card has $50 extra is a Steal unless in reality is not really any better then reference.

I really don't care honestly. I've wanted two of these cards in CF ever since that first pic of the Lightning at CeBIT! Such a smoking sexy card to CF in my 600T! thumb.gif

You need to put those things in and take pictures my friend. Like right now. Your case already looks amazing with those old lightnings. Are you thinking of changing the sleeves or anything else to make it all match?

Just so no one thinks I'm making this up. 1250 OC. 43% fanspeed, under 80 degrees, locked 60FPS all ultra settings. DOn't tell me a lightning can't do that.

Well the yellow is a bit of a sore thumb with my color scheme but its on the bottom and not very noticeable in the case. I'll stick with my white sleeved cables for now but I may go red at some point to match my RIVE. Actually been looking to get a set of the sleeved cables from Corsair for my AX1200! biggrin.gif

you could make the same argument for when newer games utilize physx. the 7970 will outperform a 680 with physx disabled on the 7970, and physx enabled on the 680. i will try to locate the review that showed this. i think it was batman: arkham city that was the example. brb.

edit: here is the review i was looking at - http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviews/1461/pg10/palit-geforce-gtx-680-jetstream-edition-graphics-card-review-batman-arkham-city.html. make sure to not only compare the numbers in the graph, but also read what they said at the bottom.

Maybe thats why Im not seeing it as impressive as you, Because here it is £500 and refererence is £400 and a gtx680 is £400, I don't think its worth the extra £100 here, oh and btw thats close to $700 tongue.gif
Nice screeny makes me want the lightining =p
But was that with 4msaa? becuase with no msaa my gtx 580(that i just sent back) Could solid lock 60fps with only 80 percent usage on that map to tongue.gif

It's not a steal when the 7970 shouldn't even be $550 in the first place.

Either way, after seeing the downsides of the 7970 lightning, I'm glad I didn't get one. Seems like it's geared only towards WC and LN2.

This! a thousand times this!. It should be under $500 for a reference and about 550 at most for this.
