[Guru3D] MSI Radeon HD 7970 Lightning Review - Page 9

More than 100 sub-zero benchers, but still low thousands in number. It is generally considered a great card for air overclockers, & they do well for it. They need average users to buy the card, if it was just the benchers they wouldn't make the money to be worthwhile to produce them. Like the x-58 OC motherboard, it was made as a benchers board, but the marketing department made them add things benchers didn't want (like onboard audio) so they could still get enough sales. So it's still a great benchers card, you can literally pull off the heatsink, put on a pot, freeze it & do as well as you would have after hardmodding for voltage & CBB, etc. with a reference card. I still consider the non-reference beefed up VRM cards like this to be a benchers card, but they are great for normal cooling as well. All the lightnings I've had did better on air/water than the reference.

These are my thoughts. Obviously 100 was a low ball number but I knew there couldn't be that many. As an enthusiast who knows other enthusiasts I know not one ln2/dice OC'er personally so I figured it couldn't be that common.

Thread Starter
I have read this thread since I posted it the other day and I will tell you I love the card. I loved the 6970 Lightning I had before this and I would have loved the 5870 Lightning if the case I had at the time could have held it. Yes its not the super card of all time foa an OC on air but I does pretty good and so did the 6970 before it. Are we forgetting that this card is designed from the ground up, top notch everything!!!!
It is what it is folks love it or not. I had no trouble paying the price for this card and there are others who did the same thing. It is a great card hands down thumb.gif

Haven't really messed around with overclocking too much yet. Did 1125MHz at stock voltage in 3DMark 11 so far but I still have to reinstall all of my programs and stuff since I did a fresh install...

Stock volts 1125 is a sure sign of a good card. There are now even more ways to get past 1125 then the xcl trick and unofficial overclocking so make sure you read up on it. To be honest I'm not even sure what exactly people are doing with the new drivers. Either way OCing on the 7970/680 is not as easy as it could have been unfortunately.

Nope, I'm finding that out. I was naievely hoping that I would install AB and have full control but nope. AB 2.2 Beta allows me to slide the voltage control but locks up as soon as I apply. Looks like I'm stuck with stock voltage at least for a little while... :/

When I first got my card that frustrated me for a long time. It was a week after release so there was not much info on how to get it all working right.

Do this first since you never had the release drivers on your PC and you need this file.

Then head over to the battle royale thread and rest of the instructions are in OP. Make sure you are on beta 15 to.
