Anyone else unsure of whether they like older PC games because of nostalgia or if those games were just better?

A little bit of both. The way I see things now is that with all the new technology and how games used to look 10 years ago. We expect way more than we get so we get disappointed really bad.

Is it wrong to expect more though? Is it wrong to expect game quality to at least stay level and not decrease? I mean if everyone just blindly accepts these games coming out and continues buying them in droves how is anything going to change?

Not to mention DLC is getting out of control. I have never bought a DLC pack in my life and never will.

I have my doubts that the "Modern Warfare Generation" would be able to beat FFVII let alone all the side-quests in it.

You sir just made my day! I literally just started a 2 hour long youtube video showing gameplay of FFVII right before reading your comment. The video is found here for all the FFVII nerds who care to watch (I started at Cosmo Canyon because its my favorite part of the game). Its part of a complete play through btw.

And I agree with you, games no-a-days just aren't what they used to be. (BTW I beat emerald and ruby weapons in FFVII and had 3 sets of master materia, so I can say that I know what its like to beat the side quests haha) Happy gaming!!thumb.gif

Games are more about marketing and targeting the widest audience (casual gamers) vs what they used to be about (mental challenge, required lots of thinking and muscle memory/skill). The indie and European devs still make excellent games. I do have to admit though that some games that are catered to the casual crown can be a lot of fun (Assassins Creed is a good example) the problem it that they're just too damn easy.

Sometimes I feel like this is a product of the achievement/trophy presence in modern games. A lot of people don't play because it's fun, they play to get their 1000 e-peen. Developers are trying to make games with achievements that seem more difficult than they really are, and in the process dumbing everything down.

Think about it, what would achievements have been for Super Mario Bros. 3?

+1, this is the sad truth. I keep an eye out for some really good games, but I usually stick to some of my older titles and I've just lost faith in most mainstream games. Generic, dumbed down and repetitive shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield have been increasing in sales over the years, so the future for games looks awful. At least four games really interest me this year, which is far more than 2008-2011. Those games include ArmA 3, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Iron Front, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Lost Alpha (mod-turned official expansion).

Have to agree somewhat. I did my first build 4 years ago, and it was the first time I ever had experience with a fully fledged gaming rig. After the build, I went out and bought a bunch of new games, including Crysis, and I played Crysis for about 2 days, and didn't bother touching any other game. I went back to playing CS:S, CoD4 and a old shooter named Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. I've even played Final Fantasy VII a couple of times.

I sometimes still game on my DS Lite, and I usually end up playing old titles like Chrono Trigger, Golden Sun, Metroid or old Mario games.

I haven't used my 360 for anything besides playing FIFA. That game is too addicting.

That doesn't mean I don't try new titles, but they just don't hold my attention like the older titles. Maybe it's the whole "things were so much better in my time" syndrome, or maybe games are really being dumbed down.
