Hey guys

So ive known about Ubuntu for years, I know how it looks, im a bit of a centos guy, anyways downloading the latest ubuntu, it looks nothing like the previous versions, it seems cut down and im finding it very irritating to just get going with it its a nightmare. Its all up and running but desktop is bare, the buttons are all different, what happened to the old version we liked and has Ubuntu taking a new direction?

Yes they changed to UNITY.
I ran Ubuntu for a year solid and then had to go back to Windows for some games and i wanted to come back to have Linux as my main OS again. I prefer gnome myself and there are ways to get rid of unity the gnome is lack luster all together.

So first i tried Xubuntu which uses Xfce environment instead of unity and gnome.
I had a ton of driver issues and my network would drop way to much for me to ignore.
So last night i installed Linux Mint and it is what i have been waiting for.

Check out Linux Mint!
~Yes i am only 24 hours into LM but it has been rock solid so far!

PS: as for Games now between Wine 1.5 and "playonlinux" Gui, i may not need to go back for quite some time.

Good Luck thumb.gif

Sometimes I just do not understand corporations logic, its 100 times more harder for me to operate ubunty, why dramatically shift, it had a pretty solid interface before, im a level 3 Linux tech at a big IT company, and I get frustrated after 30 minutes because I cant even figure what to do in it. Centos never lets me down, but Ubuntu was always the one to go for the GUI linux distribution, its like the DRM ubisoft situation in the pc world lol, they change to unity and loose a huge market place.

Not many people like Unity or even Gnome 3, and there was a huge outrage when the projects first came out. Some people have grown to like them, most seem to have moved to other Desktop Environments such as Cinnamon, Mate ( Gnome 2 Fork ), XFCE, KDE, E17, etc.

You should still be able to change the desktop before logging in though to "Ubuntu Classic" which will give you your basic Gnome 2 setup that they've always used before.

But other than that, everyone seems to be heading towards the touch screen fad. I think someone said Unity was going to be used for a set top box type of setup at one point too.
