Current GPU's are capable of pulling off way more than that. I haven't been able to understand the PC hype around Skyrims graphics from the start, it just looks like a higher res X360 version. The X360 looks like it's using a 8800GT's potential with API suppression - conglaturations for optimizing a 7800GT into the ground but the 6670 is only about twice as fast as the 7800GT, when the GTX680 is about 10 times faster.
Console games make use of the hardware but no amount of optimization is ever going to get a 6670 anywhere close to a 6870, there is too much of an architectural jump and something like a 6870 already tanks when it comes to tessellation (alone). The best thing about this iteration of consoles is going to be the use of DX11 features, but after that where do you go when you've optimized the graphics to hell but have no power to go further? Forget any type of physics, tessellation, longer view distances or any magnitude of added pollies because the 6670 may be able to glorify DX11's graphical additions at 720p when compared to DX9 but that's going to be about it. There will be a lack of power to do anything beyond the added shadows and lighting that DX11 offers. You may be able to push some of the load to the x64 CPU but that will most likely be lacking sufficient L2 and L3 cache.
The problem that I see is that Sony and MS most likely want to keep the console below 120w along with keeping the console hardware as cheap as possible (when the 6670 is already going to use a bit more power than a 7800GT). And really, the fact that they are going to use a Southern Islands GPU means nothing. They will most likely continue looking for power efficiency and price over processing power and use the 76xx skew.
As I see it, this iteration of next gens will be the graphical whores (in reference to PC gamers) because they will lack the power to do some things that could change the base of games. Instead, the power of the GPU will be used on shadows, lighting, bloom, motion blur and other filters.

I actually agree with some of this.

PC Guy: "Dude these graphics are terrible."
Console Guy: "Did you see that enemy, he had like, green eyes or something."
PC Guy: "Yea, I saw how crappy the textures were on him, and the textures everywhere else in this game are horrible."
Console Guy: "Ah crap here he comes, which weapon should I use?"
PC Guy: "Does it matter, all of your weapons look so poly I couldn't stand to use any of them."
Console Guy: "Pulse rifle seems to work pretty well, lasers tore right through him."
PC Guy: "Terrible death animation on that enemy, and where were all the blood particles? How lame. This game sucks."
Console Guy: "Wow that was fun. This game rocks!"

Are you trying to imply PC gamers do not enjoy games the same way console gamers do?

I take great pride in putting a custom PC together, seeing the final build and then reaping the benefits. My most memorable times have been on PC playing MMO's with lots of fun people, and FPS's having a good time. I do also enjoy a good story, and that is where my RPG's come into play.

If you are serious then that's wildly inaccurate. Every gamer on any platform these days expect HD gaming, and quality visuals to boot, with gameplay aside, I think the PC will always trump a console in that respect.

For me I take graphics and gameplay as equals, if each of those elements are pleasing, then I enjoy the game to it's fullest.

I'll say it again this article is about how current PC graphics tech will be game changing when consoles use it, I'm not so sure they will be game changing, rather a "catch up".

My previous comments were merely showing examples and getting my interpretation of how a certain game compared on each platform across in a purely graphical way CURRENTLY. It also says to me that we need new consoles.

I'm wondering if a year or so down the line after new consoles release, will the cycle be repeated:

PC and consoles are pretty equal usually for a long while, then the PC normally takes the lead again in graphics, because PC technology continues to push the boundaries.
Pushing these boundaries and seeing what my rig can do, is something I really get excited about. I really look forward to new features in games over the years, and how much fun it will be to play with my friends.

If the main aim is to get the game running @30fps @ 720p, all of the above is how they do it.

It's infact the other way around.

Which is why, every generation of consoles, the most talked thing about the console has been about it's hardware and graphics...You can even check this article that the mostly hot debated topic is on the visuals, very rarely it is how the next generation will enhance our gaming experience.

The best selling PC games don't have the greatest visuals.Minecraft, sims, world of warcraft, portal 1/2...just to name a few;aren't the best looking game but have sold like crazy on the PC.

Not saying that having a graphical intensive game isn't a bonus, or appealing, but the fact is many PC gamers love gameplay as well...
Of course PC gamers love gameplay. But I would not bother buying expensive graphics cards if graphics weren't important to me.

Fact of the matter is that most PC gamers are graphics whores but so are most console gamers. Part of the reason I love the Uncharted series so much is because of how nice it looks.

Kind of an offtopic harp and totally biased:

but why don't people do what CD project did with The witcher 2? Insane graphics (with and without uber AA), rich story and fantastic fluid gameplay.

Is it that hard? They aren't even a well known AAA smash hit publisher and look at what they produced!

Thanks 5entinel, for clearing things up. I share your opinion on this subject and I hope my post above yours explains my opinion better than I previously stated.
I don't see how consoles getting better graphics really affects anything. The only thing it might affect is the fact that PC games might get better ports, but that doesn't mean the games will be any better (gameplay or story wise) just because they use better hardware.

Plus console graphics will be far behind PC graphics by the time these new consoles are released, so if anyone is buying a new console just for better graphics, it would seem like a rather idiotic reason.

I don't even know why they make articles about console graphics, I mean if you think about it, 99% of people who play the console is because they don't care about graphics, resolution, gaming in 3d, or using multiple screens or projectors to game on. They just want to play, so I don't see what a new console will bring to the table as nobody buys a console because of the graphics or hardware inside.

God of War III is still more fun than any single player PC game I've played. Graphics and performance are only icing to me. The real cake is the gameplay and replayability. I'd much rather have a really fun game with archaic graphics than a state of the art boring game.

Ugh, this thread is full of fanboys on both sides. Anyway, I can guarantee that with new consoles, graphics on PC will improve as well. And graphics don't even matter! Both platforms are fine! I'm leaving.
