I think he meant "Cryengine 2 --> Cryengine 3" or "Cryengine 2< Cryengine 3"

Anyway yeah people can deny it all they want but with the exception of AA/AF and resolution the Uncharted and Killzone series most definitely stand up to any title on the PC. Killzone for example is way better looking then Metro a game with a similar art style. Only Battlefield and the Crysis games really look that much better.

I don't know. When we see Sony aiming for a 6670 there's most likely a reason. Power consumption and price is all I see.
I really don't think their aim is going to change much. If they end up using a 7850, it would blow my mind but I can't see it.

The way that performance is needed exponentially as you start increasing polly counts and generally improving the core of the game, the 6670 is going to fall on it's arse. It will equate to slightly better looking PS3 games with tons of blur but no real improvement to the base of the game.

We are entering a purgatory where we keep adding overlays and effects to get games looking more realistic but can never really improve the core of the game. And even a company like Sony has no vision or see's no need to improve anything beyond the coloring on the shell.

I think we are going to see the PC pull even further away, what with OpenCL/PhysX and heavy tessellating abilities and because of the huge gap in general performance. When the current generation of consoles came out they were on-par with PC hardware - this generation is going to put (GPU specifically) hardware in the machine that is 9-10 times slower than the fastest GPU. There's no amount of optimization that will ever bring it close to that, and they aren't even released yet.
Games developed for the PC are going to look light years beyond.

Ok. Before the rumors continue I want to point out that.

Xbox 720...will not be called 720
It may or may not run at 1080p, most likely 720p again since most gamers dont know the difference at 7-15ft away (sitting space from tv)
It may run at 60fps but not 120fps. No way a console is going to run 120fps unless its running dx8.
It will not, I repeat, will not be as strong as modern day pc's. The most it will be a strong as is a gt240, core 2 duo, 2gb ram (or relative to)

So rumors seriously, stop it before people start throwing bricks at peoples windows.

I think it's pretty much a gurantee actually that they use a 7850 or 7870 type card. It's currently the best perf per watt and they are setting in stone GPU specs now. Not only that but both chips fit into the same wattage envelope that the 360 and PS3 launched with. Plus every console generation has seen power consumption increase. In fact this would be the first generation we've ever had that power consumption did not increase if they went that route so 7850 I think is actually a pretty conservative guess.

Can't even imagine what console devs would be able to pull off with 7850 type power in their machines. It would be glorious and we PC gamers would really reap the benefits. I personally hope console devs target 720p again. That way they don't have to worry about high resolution that we're going to be playing at anyway and we get prettier pixels.

And LOL at the guy saying to expect less then 8800 GT chip in the next xbox. The Xenos (GPU in the 360) was more powerful and flexible (unified shaders) then any PC graphics card at the time of it's release. I'm not expecting that much power this gen but custom 7870 performance in a box that will not release til the end of 2013 is not unreasonable.

Also on gi.biz yesterday there was an article quoting a unnamed developer working on a durango project (Xbox successor) saying prices for developing game models had doubled. This leads me to believe these consoles are going to be much more powerful then you guys seem to think. Crytek, Epic and Dice have all been quite publicly saying they want as much power as possible as well. Crytek even went as far as saying they want 8gb of RAM but I do not see that happening.

I keep hearing the 6x faster number thrown around and wonder how accurate that is. The Xbox 360 hardware is about 8 years old, and the new one's hardware will probably not be finalized until the end of this year, leaving an almost 9 year gap between hardware configurations of the two. If we look at PC hardware that would be like comparing an Nvidia 5900 (released 9.1 years ago) to an Nvidia GTX680, just imagine the difference between those two.
Nvidia 5900 / 680
RAM: 128MB / 2GB
Fab size: 130nm / 28nm
Bus: AGP / PCI-e 3
Core clock: 400Mhz / 1006Mhz+
Memory clock (effective): 850Mhz / 6000Mhz
Texture Fillrate: 3.2 Gigatexels/s / 128.8 Gigatexels/s
Memory bandwidth: 27.2 GB/s / 192.2 GB/s
3DMark03 Score: 5213 / 129366 ( over 20x as much )
If we assume console hardware increases similarly to PC hardware, over the years, then we're going to see a huge leap. I wouldn't be surprised to see a near top of the line 7xxx AMD in the next gen consoles, and if one of those were optimized for console I could see 1080p @ 120fps happening easily.

Good points! However I dont think we'll be expecting to see any 7 series cards in the next gen unless they release later then 2013. The rumors have been that the Wii u will have somehting similar to a 4850 and that the new xbox will have a modified 6670. I haven't heard much about the new playstation other then its expected to be an amd x86 cpu with an amd gpu.

None the less even if the hardware was only 2-3 years newer: 7800 in the ps3 to the Nvidia 200 series we'd see massive improvements in console graphics let alone the 6 years of improved hardware we're expected to get!

Yeah sure.
Crysis 2 on gt240 on high-60fps at 720p
Crysis 2 on xbox 360- 30 fps at 720p

Im pretty sure that the 240 beats the xenos

Congratulations on making a completely irrelevant statement. GT240 came out way after Xenos. When Xenos came out the 1900XT was the top dog.

Yeah I mean the most powerful CPU when the 360 came out was the Athlon64X2. The Xenon was a triple core power pc based processor that could support up to six threads. The Xenos as has already been stated was the first GPU to sport unified shaders. Compare 360 games to what you can run on an 1900XT and you get the idea.

Hell the Cell processer in the PS3 if you harness it correctly is faster then current I7's in some specific tasks although it is an in order processor so it's obviously limited in a lot of ways and is hard to utilize correctly. Still a pretty amazing piece of tech.
