Some parts of Metro look outstanding. The problem is that it's rough around the edges and a lot of it looks like garbage. I could care less how large the textures are or what tech it's using. Case in point, the witcher 2 looks better then both games. Also Uncharted is way more fun to play.
And by the way making fun of uncharted's textures is probabally not the route you want to go. This image is from the *first* one. Sorry about jpg.

Why do people always quote the same pictures of Uncharted?

1. That's an off screen shot.
2. It's widely accepted by everyone that the first game has the better textures of the series
3. The look crap close up and from angles.
4. They're repeated quite a lot

With Uncharted everything is designed to look good at certain distances and certain angles because in reality the flatness of everything is hidden by clever artists. That's why Crysis and other PC games are better, they look better from loads of different angles and distances.

You find any gameplay shot of any Uncharted game at you can see just how flat things are.

It's a good looking game but it's as good as what people think it is.

lolwut?

There was never any argument, in the media "best game" is usually determined by how many copies get sold if there isn't a voting poll, I'm not doubting that you don't play the games that would just be a huge waste of money if you bought the games and never played it, again "more fun" or "better" is an opinionated thing I thought UC2 and UC3 were quite boring, and I was never making fun of UCs textures. The UC series probably has the best textures for any game on the PS3.

Right now I could get get some screenshots of HD texture mods for Crysis 1 and compare them to that screenshot of UC1 but then you will say they don't count because they are mods.

The reason why the UC series looks like it does is because Naughty Dog could take full advantage of the PS3 hardware as it's a PS3 exclusive and they didn't have to port it to PC or the 360. I can pretty much guaranty that if UC3 or any other game from the UC series was ported to PC it would look a lot better, just like every other console port.

PS3 'Launch' model consumed ~170w during idle and ~200w under load
360 'Launch' model consumed ~155w on idle and ~177w during load

Both machines are rumoured to use AMD Quad Core APU's which consume ~100w of power at full load so there's 100w gone from the budget right away.

Both machines are rumoured to have 6670 GPU's, these consume ~64w under load bringing the total to ~164w under full load for just the CPU+GPU/'s

Factor in an HDD, memory and other things and that could add up to 20w extra on to that figure.

And that's not even taking into account the heat that will need to be removed, have you seen the heat sinks in consoles? They're tiny compared to PC heat sinks.

And then there's the cost factor as well, do you want to pay $500-600 for a console again?

So, still think they'll use high end cards? rolleyes.gif

^What Frosty said. The mean power consumption of GPU's in 2006 was much less than they are today.

Not that I support the choice of hardware, but I find it completely plausible that they are going to use a 6670 @ 65w over a 6850 at 125w (for reference a 7970 is 200-250w). Couple 65w with the 45w 6550D which will eat a single digit or two just sitting idle, a 100w CPU and I doubt they are going to take a chance on a higher performance primary GPU. Your already into the high 100's after all of that and you have to wonder how accepted by the public 200w+ devices are when they are being marketed to put one in each home and used on average 2-3hr's a day.

They are also splitting their aim between developing an 'always on' internet device/gaming machine, so gaming isn't a pure primary this time around either. The public would also probably freak the hell out when they saw that their consoles used 300w, no matter far it idled down. I can see mothers shrieking at the thought. And then there is cooling it...

People just want to play games, not get a degree in setting up a home theatre PC. The majority of possibilities aren't common knowledge to the average consumer (I didn't even know what HTPC meant until I first signed up to this site).

PC gamers in their quest to prove why the platform is superior end up proving why consoles are so popular, because it's just far simpler to plug the console into the TV and turn it on.

And let's not forget issues with drivers aswell. Like it or not they can be an issue.

I guess everyone is missing the fact that consoles will most likely be on 22nm when they launch. The latest ridiculous console rumor by the way is a 16 core CPU in the 360 successor. Since you guys ar so eager to believe the 6670 rumor I suppose you will buy that one as well. http://sillegamer.com/2012/04/06/xbox-720-devkit-specs-detailed-includes-16-core-processor/

The sad thing is that you can't just enjoy both PC's and consoles. Console exclusives are simply better this generation and your really missing out on a lot of good stuff.

I'd like to point out that the 7850 is already a sub 100W part, and with a a slightly more conservative core clock and reduced voltage could probably get very close to 6670 power figures. This would make a hell of a lot more sense than a 6670, in fact the 7770 makes more sense too since it's power consumtion is lower than the 6670, but it's performance is considerably higher.

EDIT: Also, I can't figure out why all of these people want next gen consoles to have such poor specs. Shouldn't we want them to be roaring beasts that catapult the entire industry, especially PC, forward with better visuals.

Consoles have always been the catalyst for major graphical leaps in the industry, look at the difference in games from 2004 to 2005. Unreal Tournament 2004 was even considered to be pretty good graphically, and compared to 2005 games like CoD 2 it looks awful.

If you guys feel like the PC is being held back by consoles now, then just wait until we get 6 years into this next generation. It's gonna be hell if these specs are true.

No one said that consoles will or won't be on 22nm when they launch and I really doubt the 360 successor will have a 16 core CPU. Even a 16 thread CPU is pushing it a bit, it will most likely have a 8 thread (quad core) CPU. For the fourth (?) time "better" is an opinionated thing, not factual.

It's not just power consumption , Sony and MS are there to make profit. If it costs too much they will either have to sell it at a loss (like they did with current gen) or charge $1000+ for the consoles.

I dunno. I installed Windows, updates, drivers, Steam/Origin and started playing. I agree with what your saying, you have to give a crap about gaming in the first place to deal with the quirks but overall it speaks to how lazy people really are.

Drivers and the overall UI have also become much easier to deal with over the last 10 years, nevermind 20 years. What is really needed is a gaming centric Windows version, a cut down distribution that simplifies everything - Microsoft is swimming with the consoles so it will never happen in fear of undercutting it's console.
It will keep getting easier for people to adopt PC's as gaming machines. Even though I could care less for Windows 8, I think it could pull the PC even closer to plug and play.
