[CVG] The face of tomorrow: How PS4 and Xbox 3's visuals will change gaming - Page 7

Someone send me a a PM to wake me when the consoles can do this;

Oh and that's from 05, so while Uncharted, and Killzone, and GT5 (some cars and tracks) look absolutely stunning for using a modified Nvidia 7800GT nothing comes close to that video.

The consoles will NEVER be on PC's capability level.

They hold back the PC and everyone knows it. All of the crap they talk about in this article is dated and has been available on PC for at least a year if not many years.

I really fricken hate consoles because all they do is prohibit ingenuity by limiting the resources available to the developer.

I really fricken hate consoles because all they do is prohibit ingenuity by limiting the resources available to the developer.

This statement couldn't be more true.
Consoles are developed with last at best the last gen tech from PC's when released, and then the and then the stuff they do put in it tends to be GUTTED, Half Assed, Cheap as possible garbage that they shove down consumers throats at a huge premium for the next 4-7years on average. While the rest of the industry tries to move forward, most developers continue to make software based around consoles solely because the market base for them is larger. Let's face it people like to be lazy for the most part, and most aren't interested in even learning... or even know for that matter that computers can be serious gaming machines (I had a couple of friends who thought the only computer games, were the little 2d indie games you can play online, they got this face from me....doh.gif.) Until there is some sort of easy standard for the general market in gaming for PC's consoles will always be first choice of most people, this will hold everything back by years at a time.

When next gen consoles come out, my computers specs will still be far superior in all aspects of functionality.
There is NOT any restricted anything in terms of cash for console games. Look what MW3 did, a RE-hash THAT SOLD. Look what happened to BF3, it changed and FAILED. EA still made millions off BF3.
It is not because of the restricted cash flow PC and console run the same games, its because PC gaming only makes up 5% of the market share. Companies could care less about that 5%. Money is in the 50% of consoles that are bought by weekend warriors. consoles are simple. buy, hook up, play. done. Lots of money in the market that doesn't know any better.

Again a console is made primarily for gaming. A console isn't. You cannot directly compare the two due to specs alone. But if you do, you get more mileage (use over time) out of a console because you have a fixed instruction set and can optimize. For reference check out the PS2. It had crap for hardware, nonexistent memory, but at the end of it's life span (it's actually still going) look at what the devs were able to do with it. A exclusive console game can be optimized to hell and back. Who's going to spend millions making an optimization for your 3 year old wonder box? No one, because they expect you to UPGRADE it. Throw specs around all you want, you have to admit that some of the feats that a console can pull off are amazing for such old and underpowered hardware. It's inherent in the design, you cannot argue with it. If you do, you simply do not understand the basic relationship between a computer and the code that it interprets and executes. It's not a choice of which one is more competent. Since a PC does more than one task, optimization is out. With a PC you throw more horsepower at the problem (SLI, CFX). With a console, you have an older engine so you work on the suspension geometry, the gearbox, and the actual drive line dynamics. It's called optimization. That's why a small, light old car can match a newer, heavier older one that's not as optimized but has more horsepower.

As for money, the price of game development has shot through the roof. Millions sometimes hundreds of millions invested. They don't invest that much for a flop. So who would spend millions on a game that may not sell? That is the cashflow restriction I am speaking of. The money ONLY goes to big budget titles such as MW3 and FF or whatever. People play it safe these days, gone are the days of inexpensive screw ups.

As usual, these articles are focusing on a next-gen console doing the same thing a current console can do - just better. That's not good enough. It was good enough when going from PS1 to PS2 and even from PS2 to PS3 but current consoles look too good. Better graphics and better shading and all this other crap isn't going to make the games any better, especially when talking about fast-paced games. No one is going to notice and they're not going to care and to top it off, game developers aren't going to waste their time utilizing all of it when it doesn't make enough of a difference. They don't even use the PS3 to its fullest.

It's pretty simple what a next-gen console needs: Multi-monitor output. At the very least, 3 outputs. Trying to play certain games requires a very wide field of view and 1080 just doesn't cut it. This is very apparent in first-person shooters and racers. Until then, I don't see any point to a new console. The only people that will buy them are the type of person that just has to have the newest item.

Who cares? Stickin' PC and not goin' back.

What are they selling it for? "Nine Hundred and Ninety Nine US Dollars"? :3

I really don't think they're lazy, I think the problem is budget and timeline. There's such a rush to do everything, no time to creatively think in your own pace.

Lol.

Multi monitor output from a console...really? You do realize 95% of consoles are connected to a TV right, most likely in the family/living room? How exactly does a family room setup work with 3 plasmas?

Please, go take a look at what Capcom does with their RE titles. The pretty much squeezed every ounce of power out of the Gamecube and 360/PS3 in RE4 and 5. A lot of people make very well polished/optimized games; give some credit where it's due.

Maybe in terms of raw hardware, but not in terms of image quality. The new consoles are rumored to be using something similar in power to this card, and their games will be direct to metal, leaving your old video card in the dust. Sorry.

I know the PS3 can do multi-monitor (well you need the same amount of PS3s as you do monitors) but not many games support it. I think the only one is GT5, I am probably wrong though.
