HD 7970 Proper Idle voltage

My system keeps crashing when I attempt any type of real OC with a change in voltage. Can anyone tell me what the default voltage is for an HD7970? I have an MSI and Sapphire.

The reason I am wondering is because when I load up Afterburner, the voltage that it shows at startup is 1049mV or 1.049 volts. So I attempt to OC the cards, 1150/1575 with core voltage to 1.1v and it crashes immediately.

I installed Trixx and saw that it's default voltage is set at 1170mV or 1.17v. Now, my OC of 1125/1575 runs fine.

I assume that Trixx is reporting the proper voltage. I just want a second input. Thanks for all of your help smile.gif

First I would download the latest GPUz. Once you have that you can right click in the top left corner and then find your ASIC quality. Depending on what percentage you have depends on the cards default voltage.

up to 2F90 (up to 75% quality) - 1.1750V
up to 34D0 (up to 80% quality) - 1.1125V
up to 3820 (up to 85% quality) - 1.0500V
up to 3A90 (up to 90% quality) - 1.0250V

Now when your using afterburner you need to set the grpahics processor type to the correct default voltage.

I also notice that you are trying to run higher clocks with lower voltage in afterbutner compared to higher voltage with lower clocks in Trixx.

AB: 1100mv for 1150/1575

Trixx : 1170mv for 1125/1575

You have to compare like for like scenarios before you can make any conclusions. Get AB set up correctly and then try again.

that was a typo 1150 for both.

EDIT: Also as far as the voltage is concerned, that is the problem, I'm trying to figure out what the default is, the voltages I listed were simply the default voltages that each program was reporting.

EDIT EDIT: Thank you very much though, your info was exactly what I was looking for smile.gif

Man, I've been asking a lot of questions and I keep coming up with new issues.

First of all thanks to everyone who has been helping me so far.

Second: I just noticed that even if I try and change my voltage in either AB or Trixx, my benchmarks and GPU-Z do not show any change to my voltage at all... Is there something that I am missing?

These cards are so much different than my 6950's. Lots of nuances now.
