Nervous Folder

Okay.

You can see my specs below. I want to fold to help out the cause, but I have two important questions.

1) Do I need a second computer to fold on? Or can I play a game while folding?
2) If I do 24/7 I'm nervous because no one is home and I'm afraid my house will burn down.
3) Do you know what increase it will have on my electrical bill?
4) I ask about the bill to have an idea. I consider it my donation, but I still need to know.

Thanks!

To help answer your questions with my experience:

1) You don't need a second computer to fold on. As for gaming, it depends on what game you are playing, but most games I can continue to fold on my CPU, but normally stop on my GPU. Unless you game for more than 12 hours everyday, you should be able to combine folding and gaming.

2) I probably wouldn't worry about your PC catching fire. I run about 12 systems folding/BOINC throughout my house 24/7, some of which are quite old, and i've never had any kind of electrical shortage/failure/fire. If you are concerned, just be sure none of your computer vents are blocked and keep them free of dust, and you shouldn't have any problems.

3) As for electric, I can't tell you for sure, but here is a simple calculation:
Assume the PC draws 300-500w.
Minimum electric bill:
300w * 12hours a day * 30 days a month=108Kw per month
108Kw/ ~10cents per Kw=$10.80 per month
maximum electric bill
500w * 24 hours a day * 30 days per month=360Kw per month
360Kw/ ~10cents per Kw=$36 per month

These aren't very precise, but can help show the potential cost, depending on how much you fold.
4) see above

Personally, I would just start folding a little bit and see how it goes. Even if you only fold for a few hours a day, it will still benefit a good cause. smile.gif

You don't need a second computer, but you'll need to stop folding while you're gaming. That's not a terribly difficult thing to do at all.
2) If I do 24/7 I'm nervous because no one is home and I'm afraid my house will burn down.
Not a concern at all. It will create heat, but you have a quality PSU and that's the most important component in your system that involves electrical safety or a fire hazard.
3) Do you know what increase it will have on my electrical bill?
If you fold 24/7, then your bill will increase substantially. I added a dedicated folding system to my repertoire of computer hardware and my electricity bill tripled. Your experience may differ depending on what hardware you use. In fact, if you use just your CPU, then you'll probably only see a modest increase in power usage. If you can determine your system's electricity draw and provide us with your power rates, then we can help you calculate the actual cost.
4) I ask about the bill to have an idea. I consider it my donation, but I still need to know.
That's not a question, but I'll agree that it's important. Nobody will consider that selfish or anything like that.

One more thing - Currently the GTX 680 cannot fold. I'm not fully up to date on when that's expected to change, but once it does happen you can fold on your CPU and both of your GPU. Your CPU will do an awesome job with relatively minimal cost.

To expand on kremtok's suggestion on cost/power consumption, a kill a watt meter is a simple way to get a rough estimate of power draw if you're unsure on the calculations involved. Not sure if they're perfectly accurate, but should give a good idea regardless.

I would highly recommend a kill a watt meter. They can be bought for about 20$ but can give you detailed power consumption info. I have been able to calculate the power of both my rigs with it and even specific components. Folding 24/7 is about 40$ a month for but. Keep in mind GPU folding is not as efficient as CPU folding so if you just want to help out a bit and keep costs down just fold on your CPU

Awesome. I'll get setup today to start my CPU folding. I will take a look at folding on my GPUs once it's possible.

i play SC2 all the time while im folding. it works just fine for the cpu and both the HD6870 i had and the GTX570. it slows them all down for folding based off the load from other things so your PPD wont be as high but it still works.

It can vary from setup to setup. I can leave my CPU client running but generally have to disable the GPU client as I get driver crashes and other odd problems. Although I have been told my problem is weird and might indicate something else is up like an overclock that is to high

I downloaded the SMP 6.23 for Windows 7. Then I installed it and entered my folding name and the OCN team number and hit okay. Now when I hover over the icon it says working 2/2000. Is this all I need to do? I think something is wrong because it's not on a full load and my temps are like 28-30C.
