Best Low power video card - Page 2

The nforce 430 seems like it shouldn't have the compatibility problems with PCIe-2.0, but I'm not positive. There are lots of other people in the last few years that have posted "what gfx card for this mobo" threads and none of them seemed to end with "it didn't work" when they were recommended PCIe-2.0. I know that backwards compatibility is supposed to always work between PCIe2.0 cards and PCIe(1.0)x16 motherboards, but I had issues getting a PCI-2.0 card to work on an Intel 965 based HP.

That 250 watt power envelope is much more of a problem though. Any chance at like a ~400 watt Earthwatts or something? And some used ~50 card on top of that? Might be able to find a 240gt that should be able to play what he's asking

I really recommend that you don't add a graphics card, even low wattage, without changing the PSU.

Look for used 4850s and 4870s. Even 4670s. I've picked them up for under $50 on eBay and OC Marketplace and they work really well. Do everything I need in 720p high settings. Go go go! Forgotten gems, I tell you!

I got a 7750 and a 250 watt power supply. I have not yet put the sytsem together yet as I am still waiting for the cpu. But the 7750 from the reviews I've read seem to consume 220 watts max at load. These guys are usually overclocking the cpu to like 4.0ghz as well. Seems pricey at $109 but might save you considerable change on your electric bill with a year's use. I'm pretty sure on my itx set up with a radeon 7750 and i3 2100, that I'll be far under 200 watts.

One note on the 4850s though:

Avoid the XFX 4850s like the plague. They dropped them on newegg for like 45$ a while back and sold a buttload of them. What they didn't tell the buyers is that they were mobility 4850s. GPU-z confirmed the one I picked up wasn't a true 4850. This doesn't really matter, except that there are major driver incompatibility issues. I heard that XFX released a bios update that might have helped, but I've since gotten rid of the card. To get it to work my aunt had to use like 10.5 drivers or something.
