Do I have a dead motherboard? (Pics + Explanation inside)

Hi OCN,

I was investigating my old family PC, after being informed that it won't get past initial bootup.

First off, it's a ~6 year old HP a1654n bought from Future Shop, as a prebuilt PC.

Intel E6300
2x1GB DDR2 RAM
(initially a GeForce 7500GS) -> GeForce 9800GTX+,
Some random 300W PSU -> Thermaltake TR2 430W
ASUS P58W-LA (Buckeye), being this: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c00783637&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN&lc=en#N840

A few hours ago, the system would turn on only as long as the power button was held down. As soon as you let go of the power button, system would power back off within a second. I fiddled with the PSU outlet cable and that stopped happening. However, now it'll turn on and STAY on, except none of the peripherals work. And by that I mean nothing.
There is no active monitor connection (thru the 9800GTX+, i.e. DVI port). I then tried with an old 9400GT to see if maybe the 9800 was dead. Neither of them give any response.
The keyboard (generic PS/2) and mouse (generic USB2.0) will light up for a split second on initial bootup then turn back off.
All the fans (case, GPU) spin normally continuously upon bootup as they should.

Here are a few pictures of the scenario.

I did a search on OCN for the P58W, and I only came up with one other result, which is more or less irrelevant (just shows jjj123 has pretty much the same PC, lol)

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c00783637&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN&lc=en#N840

I've also looked online as to "how to" debug a possibly-dead motherboard, came up with this:

http://steverose.com/Articles/HowtoTroubleshootaDeadMot.html

I'm not sure if that's a decent solution, especially since I don't KNOW what's wrong with it. I'd be happy to provide additional pictures (detailed, zoomed, whatever) and any other information you might need regarding this system. I'm also willing to try things you suggest.

At this point, I don't know what to try currently, so I'm open to suggestions. Please see if you can help a fellow OCN'er out.

Thanks in advance!

i cant know what it is.. i guess its the mobo..

did you try with onle one of the ramsticks and switching them? does the psu smell some kind of strange?
you tried both gpu´s single and it wont work so id say its not the gpu.
have there been other stability issues? you can try another psu too if you have one :/

if its the mobo i dont know a way to fix it.. and all looks like it is the mobo.. sry
post #4 of 8
My guess- psu. Not that its bad, but that it aint compatable with the mobo. Same problem on my build, other way around- old psu new mobo. Psu worked fine with the older mobo but not mine, i rmaed but when the second mobo didnt work i took the psu into a near by computer store. Took them 30seconds to test it and say it wasnt giving something on one rail and too much on another-basicly, standerds change, even if your psu it fine has the conectors and has the wattage, the mobo wont take it. Thats just my guess thou, i would want a new mobo anyway plus those 775 boards must be a dime a dozen these days

I'd try another PSU before anything else. And, maybe the power switch is shorted. Just unplug the power switch from the pins on the mobo, and short the two pins on the mobo with a screwdriver. See if it powers on OK without the switch attached.

Could be a short somewhere else also. Pull out the mobo, just have CPU/RAM and vid installed, see if it powers on just laying on a wooden table/desk.

Hey all, thanks for your replies. I tried with a "minimal" setup, i.e. removing all the unnecessary components and using only one stick of RAM. The PSU smells just fine, whether on or off. I tried with another PSU (an old Bestec 300W installed in an 8yearold single-core AMD pc upstairs that nobody uses lol) and had no luck either. There shouldn't be a compability issue with the power supply, since the Bestec 300W is identical to the one that was initially installed in this PC when first purchased.

Not sure on what else to try. A friend who took a look at this in person suggested that I should simply get a new motherboard (i.e. replace the probably-dead socket 775 P58W) and keep the other components. However, I figure, if I'm going to get a new mobo, might as well replace the CPU with a more recent one instead, considering the E6300 is pretty much bottom of the line when it comes to the older dual-core CPUs. Dad's been asking for an upgrade on the ram (from 2 to 4GB), and seeing how expensive DDR2 is, I figure if I'm getting a new motherboard, it might as well be one that supports DDR3.

So, essentially...if I do go ahead with this, that means:

motherboard
cpu
ram
(possibly) case depending on size of mobo

would be replaced. The other option would be simply getting another DDR2/775 mATX motherboard and sticking what I have in there, which is pretty much just as expensive as a newer motherboard ($60 for an old one vs $70 for a current one, etc)

Do you guys think that's a worthwhile option/investment? Considering how old these other parts are, they're bound to go out soon, is what I think. However, I'm not well-versed in the life of computer parts, so I figure others would be the better judges. Is it worth getting an upgrade on all of the above, or would you rather just get another 775 motherboard?

Thanks for your replies so far. smile.gif

If you have to buy a new board you're better off moving to a new AMD system on the cheap.
