Phenom II x4 980 BE Overclocking. I need help.

Ok guys I'm using the ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 motherborad. I really want a stable 4.5ghz overclock. I am cooling with the H80 and right now and I'm running 4.0ghz stable. I want the best balance between all the speeds. Below you will see a list of all my setting on my last attempt. I stopped because my voltages were getting out of hand. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

These are my settings when I was going for a 4.3ghz speed.

Speeds
CPU Ratio: 19.5
CPU/HT Reference Clock: 220
PCIe Frequency: 100
DRAM Frequency:880MHz
CPU/NB Frequency: 1980MHz
HT Link speed: 1980MHz
GPU Booster: Disabled

Voltages
CPU Voltage: 1.55
CPU/NB Voltage: 1.25
CPU VDDA Voltage: Auto(2.5)
DRAM Voltage: Auto(1.5)
HT Voltage: 1.2
NB Voltage:1.25
NB 1.1v Voltage: Auto(1.1)
NB 1.8v Voltage: Auto(1.8)
SB Voltage: Auto(1.1)
Sideport Memory Voltage: Auto(1.5)
CPU Load-Line Calibration: Disabled
CPU/NB Load-Line Calibration: Disabled
PCI/PCIe CLK Status: Enabled

If you need any more info just ask.

If it takes 1.55v to get you to 4.0, 4.5 is pretty much out of the question imho. I've seen very few Phenom II's get to that speed anyway. I would temper my expectations.

Yea 1.55v is way to high for 4Ghz, you shouldn't need more than 1.48v at that speed.

What are your temps? Have you tried lowering the voltage?

Something is wrong with that setting.
Voltage is to high for that setting. I have Phenom II x4 975 BE with ASUS M5A87 and for 4.0 G I use stock voltage witch is 1.375. What is yours?
If your HT Reference Clock is 220 why CPU/NB Frequency is 1980MHz and HT Link speed is 1980MHz? they should be 2200. Stock is 2000, right?
Your stock speed is 3.8 and for 200 Mhz to increase voltage to 1.55 is way to much. Have you try with lower voltage and it wasn`t stable?
I go with mine 975 BE to 4.4 with 1.51 so I think you should go to 4.4 with voltage below 1.5.
And you should try just increasing just the CPU multiplier to see how it work with less voltage in comparison with your combination.

This voltage(1.55) is where I stopped not my 4.0 voltage at the time I was going for 4.3 and I have tried many voltages from 1.4 to 1.55 none stable. Thanks for the reply.

It's nothing you're doing wrong, nor is there any miracle fix. You've simply reached the limits of your cpu. Still quite powerful though. wink.gif

1.55 is the voltage I was using to try 4.3ghz not my stable 4.0ghz the list above was my settings when going for 4.3ghz. Thanks for the reply I will try your tips and repost with results.

Not all 980's overclock/overvolt the same. Some need more juice to get to 4.3/4.4/4.5Ghz and some just don't make it. It's luck of the draw, if the OP has tried everything to get it stable at such clocks then it's most likely a dud. I can easily get 4.5Ghz by adjusting the multiplier and vcore alone but it's not stable and it runs way to hot on AIR at that clock so i just leave it at around 4.2/4.3Ghz 1.48/1.49v.

I have read this before about CPUs but I didn't know they could come out of the clean room that disabled from overclocking. I just feel that Black editions should be built with a little bit higher standards. I still love AMD.

What temps are you getting?, A Bios flash may also help if it's outdated..
