MY current rig is asus p5kpl se mobo,700 watts op huntkey psu, palit gtx 560 ti graphics card, kigston 128 gb ssd ,wd 2tb green drive ,4gb transend ram and have the choice of upgrading fromm my dual core e7500 to a q9400 or q6600 which should i pick
post #2 of 34
The Q6600 will overclock higher easier, but if you're just going to do a mild OC or something (like 3GHz or whatever) just get the Q9400 as its 45nm and uses less power. It's a coin toss really, Q6600 65nm with 8mb l2 cache, 2.4 1066 FSB vs Q9400 45nm 6mb l2 cache 2.66 1333 FSB, they perform about on par with each other, I could be mistaken but given the Q6600's 1066 FSB, it will make it easier to do higher OC's and be easier on the ram/mobo.

Either way, I'd OC either one to 3-3.2 to keep up with GTX 560ti me thinks, should be pretty balanced then

Depends on the VID of the Q6600 in question. If its below 1.30v VID (the lower the better), then Q6600. If its above 1.30v...its a toss up, get whichever is cheaper.

I've got a 1.165v VID Q6600 in my HTPC rig, sitting at 3.6 stable 24/7 with a low profile cooler (1.30v, only so high because of the bad board I'm using). Those Q6600's can be beast if its a good chip. The system I pulled mine out of was at 4.0 daily stable for the life of the system (bought on release day of G0).

Well given your motherboard (G31 chipset), I doubt a Q9400 will do it. That would require a 438 FSB value, which G31 likely won't do. The Q6600 COULD potentially do it, but its going to run hot, and you need to keep it below 65*C. So you're going to need a darn good chip and really high end cooling to get it there.

Not going to cut it if you're wanting 3.4+ out of a 1.25v VID or higher chip. You'll be lucky to handle 1.35-1.40v or so with that cooler. Those Q6600's are safe up to 1.55v daily. Only reason why mine does so well, is because of the super low VID, since it was a first day chip.

G31 will never run enough FSB for a Q9400. It could theoretically run a Q6600 at 400FSB for 3.6, but you better watch the power phases for heat if you run alot of VCore, cause that looks like a budget board and a 3.6/1.5V OC could kill it.

my current proccesor is a e7500 at 3.68 at stock voltages with 333 fsb
post #10 of 34
If you can get 420FSB (and your RAM can handle it if you're on DDR2 800) that would be about 3.36GHz on the Q9400. That would be a best-case for G31 IMO.

Your E7500 has an 11X multiplier. The Q9400 is only at 8x.
