Don't use the full screen apps? As far as I'm aware, the desktop versions all work. Here are the list of applications that I have open on my proof of concept work machine at all times:
SQL Server Management Studio and Visual Studio
Oracle sqldeveloper and Jdeveloper
Remote desktop management and VMware workstation
Various PuTTy sessions and text editors
Various browsers not named IE
Various programs that my company develops
All of these programs play well with the desktop behind Metro. Then again, I'm using Windows Server 8 beta, might be different from the consumer versions. It would be dumb if they force you to use full screen at all times.
