Lossless is pointless for portable listening purposes.
AAC at ~192 kbps is better than 320kbps CBR mp3 in quality.

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=77586 Actually no.

It is on an objective level via spectrograms. AAC represents more data at a lower bitrate than mp3. Easily replicated in 5 mins.

See my post here: http://www.head-fi.org/t/493173/320-aac-vs-flac/45#post_6667267

Same applies to AAC.

Anyway OP, Ogg Vorbis is fine too but depending on device and firmware, it can chew through the battery life more than AAC as Vorbis is a more complex codec code wise not to mention AAC is more supported.

mp3 is a very outdated codec.

mp3 is a very outdated codec.

Past 192 (or even 128) kbps, AAC doesn't beat MP3. That's pretty much any reasonable level of quality.

I would recommend Ogg, but MP3 has the advantage of being super widespread and compatible with pretty much anything in the last decade. For portability, MP3 >> *.

No. OGG is lossy*, and so is AAC. This means that you'll be doing a lossy to lossy transcode, which sounds worse than if you had ripped directly from the source to AAC.

*Lossy unless you're using a specific set of switches.

what part of 'represents more data at as lower bitrate' you not get? Not only that, it represents the data more accurately and with minimal if any artifacting unlike mp3.
Both mp3 and AAC are data compression algorithms and thus if you were to look at each objectively, you must do it via the comparing the data it represents vs the source.

No metadata support, not to mention no point in portables.

i believe there are alot of different school of thoughts on which codec suit them best

some says mp3 at 256 is the best ie you cant pinpoint any difference at any higher bitrate

some swears by flac - a friend started listening to flac when he got himself a a sandisk clip+

for others like myself, who uses his phone as a decoder, he has to choose between a aac and a mp3

i have started an ogg collection and playing it on my computer, i could hear the difference between mp3 and ogg, not forgetting its much smaller

i will try aac, no harm trying smile.gif

btw which software able to show the spectrum of the audio file?
