[MSI Z77A GD65] USB Dead in BIOS 1, How to reflash when running from BIOS 2?

Yo guys,

Yesterday I got this motherboard in the mail after waiting for over 2 weeks and obviously I cracked out the 2500k I had laying around and gave it a good run for it's money with a 24/7 OC.

In my search for the highest stable freq. I disable as much as possible useless junk such as the LAN controller (use USB WLAN anyways), 2nd SATA controller, Firewire, energy savings asf.

Well, I managed to accidently also disable the USB controller and that's ALL the USB. Not just one line or only 3.0, no ALL USB ports are dead when you do that.

Well, My keyboard and mouse are both USB so I can't turn it back on as they don't actually work during POST nor Windows anymore.

So, I thought to myself, CMOS Reset and it's all fine again.

Then came the big scare, it WASN'T. When running BIOS 1 the boards USB ports and external headers are completely dead, there isn't even POWER going to them. I have reset the CMOS several times, played with the PSU's power, battery out asf. Nothing seems to re-enable the USB controller.

So, i'm ever so happy this board has a dual BIOS so I flipped the switch and hello, all USB ports work fine again. Flashed the 2nd BIOS with the newest one as well , re-entered my clocks and continued testing.

But even though I have found a nice stable clock, I still don't have my USB working on BIOS 1 and if this one for some reason also bricks or dies or w/e I can't do anything anymore lol. No PS/2 devices in the house.

So, anyone got a solution to either enable the USB controller again or flash the 1st BIOS? Flipping the switch to BIOS 1 when booted up into BIOS 2 doesn't work, still flashes to BIOS 2.
Thundahcat.

This is a new board that 95% of us probably don't own. I would check the user manual to see if it has any info regarding about it.

get one of this and enable in Bios
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812200272&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-_-pla-_-NA-_-NA
EDIT; if i remember correctly from earlier flashing GB mobos on P67 (which are similar "dual bios") one of the Bios chips have to be original build -don't quote me on this ,i would try to flash Bios 2 to the original build
Your best bet is to call MSI support at this point

I guess i'll have to get a USB-PS/2 converter after the weekend. I should probably not OC any further then on BIOS 2 cause if somehow that one also decides to crash I can't use my PC anymore for a while and I need it for school lol.

Btw, I could flash the 2nd BIOS with In-BIOS M-Flash to the newest one without any issue so I guess this boards a bit diferent.

I use that board too smile.gif nice board but weird is I cant flash with USB FD bootlable, it always fails at early flashing approximately about 20% maybe ... it says error checksum, before this board I use MSI P67A GD80 B3 and worked perfect when flashing it. Only through In-bios M-flash I manage to flash it.

why don't you just flash BIOS 1 with the same BIOS you used for BIOS 2?

I can't cause I can't enter BIOS 1 eh smile.gif

Fixed it already btw.
It came down to buying a PS/2 keyboard.
That actually worked and I got the board up and running again.

However, not connected to this probably but still, my board has some serious defects and issues plus I found out there's no Core Current Limit or Core Power Limit settings.
Only a ''Enhancer'' which still limits at 130w. Meaning there's no effective way to go much past 1.368v / 4.5-4.6Ghz.

Due to these issues, and the lack of Offset voltages for EIST to work, I switched to a ASUS P8Z77-V which i'm going to build tomorrow with 16GB of GSkill RipjawsX 1600Mhz CL9 1.35v and the same 2500K CPU paired with a single ASUS GTX580 DCII 1.5GB.
