I have NEVER seen any Pi times in, or near the 13 sec range from ANY AMD cpu....ever. Sounds like a bunch of haters drinkin 'hateraide'. No need to call names and tell people they are fan boi's....but no need to be an idiot either. Call it for what it is...nothing less.
If you want a good budget system-> then buy 1....buy 3! Theres 9898070987985096 different choices according to your needs. -> NOW, if you want the fastest cpu available......riiiiiiight..now, then you buy a C2D.
->My 6700 @ 3.5ghz scores 1.5x higher than an fx2_62, on SiSandra 07' Dhry ALU & Whet iSSE3 tests and scores 3.5x higher on the multimedia test, coming in at 208,386 Ix8 iSSE4 & 110757 F-Px4 iSSE2, compared to an average of 52,00/56,000-> for the Fx2.

Pull your head in and read the post correctly...!

Intel Core2 Conroe E6600 AUD$ 499.00 http://www.nintek.com.au/x/scripts/p...idproduct=7133

Team Xtreem PC2-8000 2x1024Mb AUD$ 649.00 http://www.nintek.com.au/x/scripts/p...idproduct=6693

Total AUD$ 1497.00

AMD Opteron165 AUD$ 365.00 http://www.umart.com.au/newindex2.phtml?bid=2

Just an example of what we are dealing with over here in Australia.
As I pointed out in my original post as the prices of the Core2 Conroe come down this will be the an attractive option...but..until then not for me.

As for a budget but good performing AMD socket 939 system AUD$ 750.00

No need to pitch an E6600 against an Opty 165. The E6400 will easily take care of that Opty already:Total $1,027

Pricewise, dual core socket 939 and Core 2 Duo is abuot a tie. Advantage of socket 939: better mobo (SLI), advantage of Core 2 Duo: better CPU (by a good margin)

The main problem in Australia seems to be highly expensive DDR2 RAM

No schit!

Guys from Australia, what is the most popular place to buy PC hardware in Australia? I guess electronics must be expensive because it has to be flown in.
