Battlefield 3 Lag Spikes/stutter GTX 460 768mb SLI

Thread Starter
I'm getting constant lag spikes / stutters in Battlefield 3 and I do realize what the problem is, the vRAM of my video cards are too low.
I can barely run the game on high, should I get GTX 460 1gb's SLI or will it help if I upgrade my ram to 4gb to 8gb?

Hey Mate,

I can confirm that GTX 460 1GB SLI will run BF3 on High with everything on just fine. I get the exact same issue as you when I try to run Ultra with only 1GB of Vram. So if you want to run High, go for the 1GB models... if you want Ultra, you will need to go higher. The power is there with the SLI GTX460 (~70 FPS on High, and AVG 48 FPS on Ultra before the game attempts to load something no in Vram then it dips all the way to 20 while loading).

But yes, 1GB 460's is enough for High, not Ultra without "lag spikes".

I play on high ultra settings with my sli 768 460's so it could be something else. I do leave textures on high tho

With my single 768mb 460 I was getting lag spikes and stutter if I didn't close EVERYTHING before I started playing, upgrading to 8GB of RAM fixed that. Ram is so cheap you might as well just do it.

Imo, if you're going to sell your cards and upgrade, why not just get a more powerful single card?

Textures on ultra uses just over 1GB vram if I remember correctly. Why I ended up going with the 2GB 560 ti.

Well people keep telling me it's either the RAM or the vRAM, which is it? I'd rather add 4gb RAM since it's much cheaper

It's both. 8GB of total RAM will help for sure. It definitely helped me when I had 4GB and went to 8GB on BF3. So you can fix that very cheaply, the other thing though is you have low VRAM.. BF3 is VRAM heavy so your "lag spikes" or "stuttering" could be a mix of lack of VRAM and/or lack of physical RAM.
