Call of Duty: World at War Launch Issues

Thread Starter
Yesterday I installed COD5, patched to latest version, launched it and started playing. I went away, came back and suddenly it wont launch (gets about a second into the intro cinematic then crashes to desktop "stopped responding". Tried over and over, but it wouldn't launch. So I did some browsing and listened to some music for a couple of hours on the same PC, and then tried again. The game launches fine, multiple times. I shut it down for the night, and this morning when I try to launch it, it's back to the same old issue: see/hear a second of the intro movie, then back to desktop with error. Again, I try multiple times.

This sounds like the old issue (that I thought they patched) where you could fix it by changing the default windows freq/sample rate. I tried this. There were conflicting instructions on the net, some say 24bit 48000Hz, some say 16bit 44100Hz, but I tried both and neither worked.

There are a bunch of recent threads on this issue, but no answers. Has anyone here found a solution?

EDIT: Here is the error message:

Hmm im a regular COD5 waw player and i've never seen BEX crash before..

You can try few things;

1. go to my documents (show hidden files and folders)>> appdata > local >> Activision >CODwaw>> delete cache file and any extra mods, and maybe any extra usernames you're not using..

1.2. while you're in appdata > local folder >> go to punkbuster folder > open waw folder and delete pb folder

2. download pbsetup, exe (from evenbalance); add Codwaw pb again and let it install/update

3. download and reinstall pbsvc.exe (also from evenbalance)

4. maybe even delete MP cfg and let it regenerate, (found at steep no.1 by current username)

5. If you have steam version, disable steam ingame chat overlay.

And make sure you're not blocked by your router&firewall..

Some say they need to plug in a microphone to work properly.. I didnt have such issue (no mic), but i remember i had to reinstall XFI sound driver or it crashed on servers with mic chat.

I've already tried most of those suggestions, but I'll go through them again. However, before I do, could you please tell me what bit/sampling rate you have set as default for your sound devices in Windows sound CP? (eg. 16bit 44100Hz)

Thanks.

Retail.

By the way, I backed up the game's directory the moment I was done patching it, and I've already tried restoring from that.

Now, I know that the moment I say it's fixed the issue is going to come back and bite me on the arse, but I've given it three days and many launches, system restarts etc. so here goes:

I think the issue is fixed. Exactly what I did was:

Delete everything in ...Program Files (x86)\Activision\Call of Duty - World at War, replace with backup I made immediately after I installed the game and it's patches.
Delete everything in ...AppData\Local\Activision\CoDWaW
Delete everything in ...AppData\Local\PunkBuster\WAW
Run pbsvc.exe and uninstall PunkBuster
Restart PC
Run pbsvc.exe and Install PunkBuster
Run pbsetup.exe and update World at War

I suspect that the highlighted actions are what fixed it, as I'd already done everything else (just maybe not in that order). So I'll just have to pray that this error doesn't start happening again - if it does, I'll be sure to post here. Thanks for the assistance.
