Fan isn't spinning in my mineral oil build

Thread Starter
I just finished my first mineral oil immersion build and everything went according to plan! Temps are great, i've got no leaks, and it looks amazing. My only problem is that the fan on my power supply isn't spinning up. It 's just twitching over and over again undoubtedly because of the viscosity of the mineral oil. I've tried assisting it to spin with a wooden skewer and it hasn't helped. I left the case on the power supply when i filled up the aquarium so its just like it was when it was in the normal ATX case (its an XFX black edition and the casing was just too well detailed to remove and leave it bare).

Any advice? It's not software controlled like my GPU fan so i can't just up the voltages on it to help it keep spinning. As much as I'd like to keep it in there and not mess with it I'm sure letting sit and twitch over and over is going to burn out the motor. Should i take it out of the oil and just pull the fan entirely? Try to replace it with one I know will work? (I don't have any 140mm fans sitting around so i see many worthless fan purchases in my future and lots of returns if i go that route).

It's submerged in mineral oil... Why would you even need it to spin?

You do not need a fan there, the oil will cool the PSU without problems.

I you would like the fan to work though, just wire it to PSU 12V output.

I was thinking the same thing. Some psu fans dont turn on until theyre under a certain load right?

Sounds like it is trying to spin slowly but doesn't have enough juice to overcome the oil viscosity. The jerking is it thinking it is blocked, stopping, waiting, and trying to start again.

Two options - remove it entirely or rewire it to a 12v line so it spins full power.

Yes but as the OP stated the fan is twitching so it is trying to spin. The best bet if you feel safe doing so would be to disconnect the power to the fan. As stated you really do not need it running in the oil anyway.

This, it sounds pretty spot on. It's trying to start the fan at low speeds, but the fan doesn't get enough juice to run in oil at that setting.

I'll rewire it. The more circulation i have in the oil the better right?
