Need Some Help - Making the Switch to a Mechanical Keyboard

Hey guys,

I've gone through two Logitech keyboards in the past two years or so and I'm looking to venture into the realm of mechanical keyboards.

I've already narrowed it down to red switches and I have the options limited to about three right now (unless I'm missing a better brand/model).

Filco Majestouch-2 Red Switch Limited Edition: http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard_details.asp?PRODUCT=930 (Can't find a tenkeyless)

Leopold Linear Touch: http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=leopold,fullsize&pid=fc500rrab

CM Storm QuickFire Rapid: http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/category.php?category_by=1&category_id=1721&category_name=CM%20Storm%20QuickFire

Again, I pretty much have narrowed it down to red switches based on my usage and the research I've done thus far.

I'm not really worried about the price, but I'm not prepared to spend $50 more on a keyboard just because it's branded Filco. The price-to-quality ratio has to be relatively realistic.

Also would be nice if someone could tell me where to even get Filco keyboards in the States!

Thanks for any help in advance.

All the boards you listed are great choices. Personally, I wouldn't get the CM solely based on it's logos...

I'm assuming you're planning on gaming mostly?

I know, it's so hard to choose!

And yes, I spend most of my time gaming at a competitive level in mainly FPS games, so the WASD keys get banged up quite a bit!

I also wasn't basing it off it's logos; I'd actually rather have minimal brand-labeling! I've just heard that the CM board is basically the same build/structure as the Filco.

You can find Filcos on Amazon, but they don't have reds. It's the same vendor that you linked, but shipping is free.

I wanted a middle ground between blacks and browns and reds seemed to be that. It sucks that Amazon doesn't carry them anymore!

Maybe Leopold or the CM Storm QF? How do you like yours?

How are reds a middle ground between blacks and browns? Reds require 45g of actuation while browns require 55g. Reds are REALLY light and actuate really easily. To give you an idea, I was able to depress my brown switches simply by resting my fingers on them.

Gotcha. I just thought browns had a click and I'm not really familiar with how much of a "click" it is or quite frankly what the click does.

So do you recommend browns? And if so, would the Filco Majestouch-2 with Browns be a good choice?

Personally I'd recommend browns as your first switch. They're known as the "safest" choice between gaming/typing. In polls they're usually the most popular, followed by blues. Reds could prove to be a pain to type on because they lack tactile feel and are easily pressed.

Browns do not have a "click", but they still make noise. Check out this video for a sound comparison between the switch types.

I think the browns would be ideal then. I don't care about the noise since pretty much any mechanical keyboard is prone to make noise. Based on what you said about the reds, are the browns THAT much harder to press? I'm using a Logitech G510 now and I'm not really sure how they'd compare, if they did compare at all.
