RAM/Pagefile

Thread Starter
Is it true that you can use a spare HDD simply for a pagefile or w/e so you can use it as a sort of extra RAM? I have this old 10 gig drive, not sure about the RPM's but most likely 5400. Someone was telling me you can use a few gigs of it as RAM and windows will boot super fast. Any comments?

i planed on my new rig to partition a section just for pagefile i think it will help even though il be using 2 gigs of ram LOL

Yes its very true. Moving your PageFile to another HDD allows for your MAIN HDD to have less jobs to do allowing for slightely increased performance especially in programs that really use the Pagefile.

Quote:
THE PAGING FILE: There are two types of memory which helps XP fuction correctly. One is physical memory ( RAM ) and the other is Virtual Memory, referred to as the paging file. This is an area of your hard disk used as a buffer when RAM is low on resources. If you have another harddisk installed in your p.c you can move the paging file there and reduce the stress of two activities on your main harddisk.

Step 1: Reducing the work on your main harddisk can speed up application response times ( This will only benefit you if you have another harddisk ). Open ''System properties'' in the ''Control panel'' and select ''advanced''.

Step 2: Under ''Performance'' click on ''Settings'' then select ''Advanced''. Go to ''Virtual Memory'' and click on ''Change'' to see your current settings. At the moment ''C:'' will be selected so click to highlight your other drive instead.

Step 3: Having selected a different drive you can choose the ''custom size'' option and set an ''Initial Size'' and ''Maximum size'' for the paging file. Or opt for the ''System managed'' size and XP will decide whats best for you.
From my FAQ.

Ya it's great if you actually use the Pagefile... I know Windows always uses it, but if your system doesn't utilize the pagefile a lot, you obviously won't notice a difference. Like me, with 2GB RAM, very seldom does my system use a lot of the pagefile. All depends on what you do with your computer.
