Christmas Upgrades ( I love XMAS)

Thread Starter
Well , i have this rig since the 27th of July , in my 14th birthday.
It was a hell of a upgrade from a 800mhz P3 and a Geforce 2.
And this rig will last at least 3.5 years , so every 6 months I will do an upgrade.
My planned upgrades for XMAS are:
Western Digital Raptor X 150GB 10.000RPM With the cool and weird cover ( only costs more 10$ than the normal one , so why not?)
SoundBlaster Audigy 4
And this rams: ( i'm willing to sell the ones in my sig)
Corsair XMS2 800mhz PC 6400
Tell me what do you think , or if there is a better choice, for the same or less amount of money
post #2 of 13
Personally, I would go with 2GB RAM, and not get the Raptor. Better performance that way (add another 160GB disk to your current one for RAID0).

My suggestions:

Well , would 2x80GB hd's in raid 0 better for gaming than the raptor?
And about yhr ram , why is that better ( and way more expensive) that the corsair's?
Is there a big diffrence between the Audigy 4 and the X-FI Extreme Music?
Well it is more expensive because it is 2 GB instead of one

Performance of 2x160gb (why you say 2x80?) will beat the raptor in terms of bandwidth, but the raptor will have the advantage of faster access times. However, in gaming, I think it'll be close to a tie. As in cost, the upgrade to RAID is tons cheaper!

RAM is more expensive, since it's 2 GB. That's the main reason why I change the choices you make.

The audigy 4 is getting a bit old, while the xtrememusic is fairly new. Quite a difference in my opinion.

Ups , i forgot , that detail....
ANd if i bought another gig of ram like the one i have now?
They are already pretty fast ( at least i wanna think so...)!!
ANd what about the HD'S?
You could indeed add another gig of the Kingston, but if you're going at it, and maybe upgrade to Core 2 Duo in the future(?), then you might as wel get the DDR2 800. If no Core 2 Duo plans exist, then just add RAM to your current RAM.

No C2D plan.
It's my father's rig... and he only upgrades when something gets broken , or when it doesn't respond fast ( something that will never be noticed in this pc so i will , virtually never upgrade )
And i would get those 80Gigs disks just for me(gaming HAHAHAH) , and the 160Gb for the rest of the family.
The sound card is really very expensive and i will only grab the XTREME MUSIC one if it the price drops a little bit.

Well i have decided to go with this:
Another gigabyte of Kingston 667mhz RAM
WD Raptor 36GB ( i'm undecided about the 36 or 74GB models)
And , i've heard that Vista will only be compatible with the new generation of sound cards(don't know if it's true) so ill stick with onboard for now....
Thanks for the help , ill post some pics in XMAS
