Best configuration for 2*2tb, 2*1tb, 1*320gb?

Thread Starter
Hello,

I am currently trying to configure my computer to be able to have the largest storage possible while being fast (not a priority) and being able to backup (priority) I will be using the onboard Intel raid controller.

So far I'm thinking 320gb for os, and somehow (this is where I dont think its possible) have 2* (2tb + 1tb) as 2 3gb drives.

current setup is 320gb for os, and 2tb backing up 2*1tb in raid 0.
thanks.

unless your os is on a raid you arent going to get a speed increase, and in fact raid 0 (stripe) is more dangerous,'cos if one drive fails you lose data on both.i'm assuming thats why you're backing up the raid to the 2tb drive. So unless the raid is used for video editing or something else that benefits from the speed a stripe gives i would break up the raid to give more storage , 4tb rather than 2tb..then depending on what you need to back up ie os,photos, doc, game files etc i would use 1x 1tb as a backup ,leaving 1 + 2tb as extra storage, or even mirror the 1tb drives leaving 2tb as extra storage ..if you need to backup everything then leave it as current or if your mobo/raid setup allows it then stripe the two 1tb drives(current) and then mirror that raid set onto the 2tb drive..
summary:
most storage space.. 320 gb os, no raid..4tb of storage..backing up os and other stuff onto 1 or more of the remaining drives
least storage,most redundancy .320 gb os, stripe(raid0) 2 x 1tb and mirror the stripe onto 2tb drive...2tb in total
..middle ground..320gb os, mirror the 1tb drives(raid 1), leaving 2tb as extra ..3tb total
safest option..320 gb os..1tb as back up, then use other 1tb as an external backup which you hook up say once a month, copy from the internal 1tb then take the external offsite..that way even if you pc/house is destroyed you still have your data..3tb total

as far as speed goes wd classify their drives: green(slowest.5400 rpm) then blue then black(7200rpm).. i'm not sure what yours are..the 320gb is either blue/black and the tb drives are likely to be green, If thats the case then leave the 320 as your os...if you have a black drive then use that as your os drive...to find out which model you have go into device manager, under disk drives you'll see something like "wdc wd10eacs"..google it and you'll get a colour..

hope this helps, it all depends on how much data you need to backup

Do 1TB RAID 1 for OS and user folder, i.e. documents, pictures, etc. Then RAID 1 2TB array for all your other data.
Then your 320GB for extra programs/scratch drive/whatever.

Don't think you are going to get any significant speed increase with RAID 0 and 7200rpm mechanical drives. Sure, your sequential read and write speeds will go up but regular data use and program load times will not be greatly effected. I used to run a short stroked RAID 0 that hit over 200MB/s read and write across the whole volume with an access time of 8.9ms, still not a big difference from the single drive except for large file transfers.

well i would need to do a direct backup of a storage drive or setup eg currently its roughly 1.5tb worth of files on a 2*1tb raid 0 backed up onto a 2tb drive and currently im thinking the best way to get 2 copies of it (os drive doesnt need to be backed up), is to do 1tb+2tb backed up onto 1tb + 2tb, though I have no idea how to do that.

Do you care about boot times? If not...

320GB OS drive. Most programs on there.

2x1TB RAID-0 for games. (I'm assuming games are most important, and are where you want speed? OS drive separate means no other software can interfere with your games. Enjoy your stutter free experience. thumb.gif )

2TB for Storage
2TB for Critical Backup.

There'll be enough room to backup the games and OS drive, probably - or the storage and OS drive. Most backup programs compress slightly, but one drive won't be protected, so stick non-essential stuff on it.

I've found EaseUS ToDo Backup very easy to work with, so I'd recommend that to you:
