Initial Configuration for New Build

Thread Starter
Hey, guys.

I wasn't really sure where this thread should make its home, so I just stuck it here. Sorry if it's in the wrong place.

I'm about to start building my first rig (I'm just waiting for a few more parts), and I have a few questions about setting things up. This is my first foray away from pre-built machines, so please bear with me.

I'm not really sure in what order I need to install drivers, OS security updates, and whatnot; I'm going to be using Windows 7 x64.

My guess is something along these lines:

  1. Install Windows 7
  2. Update BIOS, restart & configure.
  3. Install Chipset, CPU & Video drivers.
  4. Install all OS updates.
  5. Install Sound Card/miscellaneous drivers.
  6. Install AntiVirus program.

Does this look about right? Or, if not, in what order should I set things up?

Thanks!

Even so, I fully intend to update my BIOS, since it may add additional compatibility or bug fixes.

That strikes me as a bit odd, but okay.

Thanks for the input, guys. Any other comments? biggrin.gif

Bump. I'd love some additional opinions, because I haven't done this before. I don't want to screw something up, haha.

When I do fresh installs, I go

1.) Install OS
2.) Do not connect to the internet or even your ISP
3.) Install all drivers
4.) restart
5.) Make sure everything is ok. OS recognizes my hardware and not tagged as universal PnP, etc.
6.) Install anti-virus
7.) Connect to the internet
8.) Update AV
9.) restart
10.) let the AV do a full scan, while I get and install the rest of my programs and update everything.

I do this just to give malwares as small a window as possible to infect my PC. I did an XP install once that got a virus 30mins in... Other than that, I have not experienced any issues with installing drivers/bios/programs if not installed in a specific order, so you should be fine. And if it fails, reformat/reinstall and try again biggrin.gif, it's a fresh install, no stuffs to back up yet...

I also don't update the BIOS unless I'm having problems and I don't know why or am expecting it to be motherboard related. Or like the previous poster said, I wanted a new feature (Have not happened to me yet).

If this is a fresh install, it seems pointless to run a full AV scan (unless your OS has been "acquired" in a different way). Or are you referring to fresh OS installs on a used drive? I always run DBAN on old/used drives (or if I'm selling/giving away a drive).

Just an assurance that nothing got in during the time I connected to the net and the time my av completed it's updates. It's just that I have experienced getting a virus 30 mins into connecting to the net with no AV. Just being careful. And besides, your av will bug you for a full scan as soon as you install it, might as well get it over with tongue.gif

You don't need to update the BIOS unless you need to. You had to update AM3+ boards to allow Bulldozer to run properly, those type situations. But its not worth risking me screwing up my motherboard IMO.
