Picking the most suitable PSU for high-efficiency/Low-Noise HTPC/Server?

Thread Starter
Firstly, thank you for visiting this post. smile.gif

I've been reading around alot to cherry pick all my components and I've reached a possible dead-end for my power supply choice.
All other parts, exept the motherboard have been choosen after comparing power consumption tests and noise production.
(Mobo may be switched for a less power demanding board.)

The PSU I've been considering for many months now, is the Earthwatts 450W 80+ Platinum.
But, since I really want a almost silent system.. I was wondering if there are any better choices?

And if you have an idea about any ultra-low noise 120mm fans and/or 100mm fan for my CPU-Cooler, please mention them. smile.gif

Components

Processor: Intel I5-3570T 35W (Or Xeon 20-25W equivalent, considering getting K-model and downvolt & clock)
Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-I DELUXE Z77 (Mini-ITX)
GraphicsCard: SAPPHIRE RADEON HD7750 ULTIMATE (Fanless, 45W)
RAM-Memory: G.Skill Sniper 2x4GB 1600MHz 1.25V

HDD: Western Digital 3TB WD30EZRSDTL (Best Green HDD available, in terms of power consumption)
SSD: Crucial C300 64GB (I have some lying around)

Chassis: Silverstone Sugo SG08 (It looks good and has enough room.)

CPU-Cooler: Scythe Shuriken Rev.B (+Low Noise Fan)
Chipset-Cooler: (Possibly)
Case Fans: 2x 120mm 600-800RPM

Doesn't the SG08 not have any 120mm fan mounts? Or maybe one if you remove the top 180mm Air Penetrator? For that matter, the system is small enough to fit in just a SG05 / SG06 instead I think, which is smaller and cheaper. Also with that HD 7750 cooler design, double check that it doesn't reach backwards and interfere with the CPU cooler.

The Intel low-power desktop processors aren't really worth it unless you want to be sure that out of the box you get the low power consumption. If you downvolt and downclock the regular ones, you get the same thing (except not really the same Turbo Boost behavior).

For this kind of power draw you could just use a PicoPSU with a fanless power brick. Some kind of ~150W model would be plenty. You could likely get away with less of course.

1.
I'll probably be fine with a single 180mm fan.
The reason I'm considering the SG08 is partially because of the looks, I like it more than SG5/6/7.

2.
I know, that is why I'm considering the K-model.
Though I've read some places that people have problems reaching the same power consumption as the T-model has.

3.
The PicoPSU is normally less efficient than 80+ silver.
I've read tests and they specified that the PicoPSU is at 75-83% efficient which is less than what I want. (But I could manage.)
And the efficiency is reduced further because it is difficult to find a highly efficient power brick. smile.gif

No, the DC-DC on the PicoPSU itself for the minor rails, should be very efficient, much more than that. It's just that the power brick may be significantly less efficient than that.

Too bad the price on the Kingwin Absolute Platinum 550W went up from $100 to $120. That would easily run 100% fanless for your system. I think the Antec Earthwatts just uses a 120mm Yate Loon ball bearing fan, but I think it gets run kind of slow. If you really turn down the 180mm AP fan, maybe you could hear it though? I don't know.

Basicly, Earthwatts vs Kingwin?

As long as the price isn't over 150$-ish.. My wallet will recover. tongue.gif

Since you recommend it.. What did tests say?
Does it easily overheat with low airflow? and is the power-quality ok?

Thanks for the link. smile.gif

Any ideas if there are any fanless Platinum PSUs available?
Since this system is going to be running 24/7.. It'll help smile.gif
