Doing a little folding again

Decided to fold on my girlfriends PC, have to see how much the electric bill goes up. Been living thrifty last few years, but may have a couple bucks to spend.

I've never gotten the chance to GPU fold, back in my folding days it was all single core CPU's.

The poor C2D E6750 seems to take a long time to complete a WU, the ATI 5770 seems to chug them out pretty good.

I wonder how cheap the quad core chips for this motherboard are now.

The client says 5954 estimated PPD.

My old stats were 127,523pts from 2,269 WU's, I'm already up to 12,845 from 7 WU's.

Anyway, I'm folding for you guys now !

Thanks and welcome back. smile.gif

Because you mention GPU folding and trying to be thrifty I thought I'd mention that in general CPU folding is more efficient in terms of points per watt than GPU folding. For example something like the i7 2600k puts out just about the best PPW currently. With an older CPU putting out less points for more watts it may be closer to the efficiency of a modern GPU like the 560 or something but just something to think about if you'd like to maintain your folding with minimal power consumption. This thread has more information if you're interested.

I can understand, but this system is bought and paid for and is already in use most of the day.

The joke is the Q6600 quad chip to upgrade this relic would be over $100.

I thought GPU folding was just much better because of the massive amount of parallel computations?

It was a long time ago, think my little farm was P4 northwood 1.8, a few Athlon XP 2400's, and eventually a Athlon 64 3200. I had the Athlon XP's just barebones, mobo/cpu/ram and used a linux server to remote boot them. I lived at home, so the cost of electric I didn't really consider. The heat was horrible tho, my room only had like a 5000 BTU AC unit and all those PC's smoked it.

I remember Microcenter had some sick deal when you bought that the Athlon XP 2400 and some ECS mobo, like $130 or something.. lol

Then you meet a girl and feed her after midnight and all heck breaks loose.

You folded 3 wu's 2002. Did folding teams even exist when you started?

I just took a peak and in 2/04 I was posting on pcper forums about 4 folders locking up :-) I was doing it for awhile before I made that investment, and I'm pretty sure since day one I was folding for pcper. Those few I probably forgot to put the team number in.
