NOOB!!! Why do I need a server?

Thread Starter
Hi!

Long story short:

I'm tired of all my home pc's packed with hdd's and all my external hdd's with TB's of data.... so I asked a friend about server stuff.

I want to use old PC to pack with hdd's so I can put ALL my data to a central place. And every future PC will only need just one small SSD for OS and a few tools/games...

I asked: what do I need? I have the hardware, now what?! Install software? Change settings? I dunno....

He just told me: Why not use the PC in your network. Just hook it up your network.

I was like.... Oh yeah!!! Why not?

Then the question rose: Why need a server???

Now it's up to you guys to tell me all the advantages of a home server (basic use)

You seemed to answer your question as to why you'd need a server. Central place to store data,no need to add hdd's to other pc's,run raid or folder duplication so data is on more than 1 hdd. Also the ability to backup all the data stored on the server(external hdd etc..) just encase. And just to add another positive, you'll be learning a different type of OS/file structure, depending. Other will chime in I'm sure but heres some link of Server/NAS OS's to have a look at.Depending on your components better advise can be given, hope this helps a bit.

sounds like you need to make a NAS server for a centralized storage solution and make use of something like unRAID or freeNAS..
Although i havernt quite finished you will find some great links here

If you're comfortable with windows, WHX may be your solution. You need redundancy, so a server wins.

Hardware RAID is a must for any server IMHO unless you can live with potentially losing everything. Its not a backup but its a nice safety net. A 2TB drive in my 6TB RAID 5 array died the other day, was simply a case of popping in a new drive and the RAID was rebuilt in 12hours.

I've had 1 RAID setup before... Didn't work out well for me... But that was in s775 on the 680i "age"

2 raptors in RAID 0 for OS

4 Spinpoints in RAID 0+1 for Data

After trying to install the raid driver in a fresh windows copy...

And finding out how the BIOS had to be setup correct...

It finally somehow worked...

Until 3 out of 4 Samsung Spinpoints failed... (lucky not @ same time)

So I know how important RAID can be and it sure is needed in data servers (at least also my opinion)

As for hardware: it will be (IIRC):

ASUS 680i (striker extreme?) s775 mobo
E5200? (cheapest BUT core 2 duo at the time) + Zalman 9700 cooler
2x 2GB Corsair DDR2 800MHz
2x ASUS 8800GTX or 1x 9800GTX+ (depends on friend of me)
HDD yet to choose... (probably my WD Raptor wich will be free whenever I buy my SSD to swap the Raptor) for OS
Just a few TB's will do atm so I'll just use the older/slower SATA ports (untill my 2nd pc gets too old and will replace my 3th's PC aka Server)
PSU will be some corsair...

Is the speed of the HDD's important? I mean is the Gigabit network fast enough to transfer data between 2 PC's. Or will the HDD be bottlenecked (SATA 2 I guess)

I completely agree. Hardware RAID is the way to go. You can find Dell PERC 5 / 6 or 3ware controllers relatively cheap on ebay these days. Having used software RAID solutions in the past, I've found them slow and unreliable. Even NAS operating systems like FreeNAS do not appeal to me anymore. Personally, hardware RAID + Windows Server/CentOS/Ubuntu is the preferred choice for me.
