new server, need help

Thread Starter
I am utilizing old parts from a computer and adding a bunch of new hard-drives to make a home file server. From what i've read Freenas is a good route to go and utilize Raid Z rather then using Raid 5 through windows. I had a a couple questions, I am using a Ga-p35-DS4, With a core2duo e6700 2.66ghz, corsair 500w psu, 4gb 800mhz ddr2 ram. I was looking at other using 3tb seagate drives or 2tb seagate drives. I figure if i can support 3tb would be worth it as would save me money then buying a a few more 2tb drives. im planning to make a 6tb usable space server. also i am using this server mostly for file storage and steaming over home network.

if your platform is 64 bit using ZFS and RAID Z works better with 6GB of RAM and a general recommendation with freeNAS is 1GB of RAM for each TB of HDD space smile.gif

as to support with that mobo for 3TB drives its a maybe if you can find the tweak in this thread http://www.overclock.net/t/1154948/modified-ich9r-bios-am-i-safe but i have my doubts
http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php?topic=7137.0

i think you would need a RAID controller card to support 3TB HDDs

as to the rule of thumb, its more to get optimal performance but i think personally 4GB will do but as to ZFS i would get 6 - 8GB if you can or maybe just a 3 x 2GB kit atleast smile.gif

You should be fine with 4gigs, personally I would just run Ubuntu Server 11, but then again I run a ton of stuff on my servers hah...
