can someone help me understand why my core voltage is 1.360v when it is on idle and 1.336v when i'm stress testing using prime 95 small ffts and IBT?

When the system is put under load, the vcore drops. It's called vdroop. It's normal.

Put load line calibration on the next step up (I think it's ultra high?) and it should fix the problem.

By the way, you should OC with offset voltage. You get low voltage and low clockspeed then it ramps up perfectly fine. Saves power and extends lifespan of the system biggrin.gif

thanks. i put the load line calibration up one and it fixed it. i would go for an offset overclock for reasons like you say but i find it requires more time to get it right and this quick overclock was so i could play The Last Story on the Dolphin emulator with near perfect FPS redface.gif

Fixed it is the wrong way to think about it IMO. Intel incorporated the droop in the design to allow for voltage spikes when load changes suddenly. It is perfectly fine (and maybe better for longevity) to have a droop in the voltage under load.

ok so i took what you said into consideration and changed it back. now would i say i got 4.6ghz at 1.370v (in the bios) or 1.336v under load (cpu-z)? which would be correct in saying so?

1.336v under load. When it isn't under load the voltage is less relevant - there is less current and less heat generated. Especially if you are using offset mode and have one of the power savings states or EIST enabled - then when not under load, Vcore will be automatically lowered.

Strange - then again, my i5 750 on my MSI board has a similar issue - the voltage under load is higher than at idle, whereas Intel's vDroop spec is to lower the operating voltage under load. Probably a BIOS update may fix the issue?

Do you have offset voltage and one of the power savings states (C1E, C3 or C6) or EIST enabled? If so your idle Vcore will be less than your load Vcore as it will be dynamically lowered when idle. Otherwise the idle should be higher than the load.

The OP has a lower Vcore under load but is not using offset voltage.
