Display driver stopped responding & ATIKMPAG.SYS 0x00000116 BSOD - New HIS 7950

Thread Starter
Hey guys
So it's been some confusing past couple of days... I've just finished of my 'dream pc' last Friday after installing the last peace, the HIS 7950 and I was loving it, I had installed all my programs like Photoshop and Sony Vegas on my new SSD and my on a separate hard drive, all my games were installed, a system that had worked perfectly fine a day earlier..

**things you may need to know, using eyefinty {4320 x 900}, NO over clocks have been done yet, system worked fine with the 6850, driver up to date**

So after enjoying the title Battlefield 3 for about 5 hours in total (over 2 days) I had a crash... it jumped me back to widows after a black screen for ~3 seconds with the following error in the right hand corner of the dash board " Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered successfully, Display driver AMD driver stopped responding and has recovered successfully" (refer to picture'untitled') ( this problem would not occur when I was using the HIS 6850 with the same motherboard cpu, ram, everything)
as I tried to click on the message to get more details, it just dissipated, it wouldn't let me expand it to see more details on the message

after that, bf3 would continually crash like this, it would not let me open the game at all without this error... and after about a day of trying to work it out, my computer started to crash in things like Google chrome and eventually in windows when I started the computer... what would happen was the computer screens would go black or freeze for several seconds then return to the home screen with the error, "display driver stopped responding--" I uninstalled the drivers and installed the latest one and it did the same, BUT when i didn't have the drivers installed i had no problems, but I couldn't open any games obviously to test it properly... weird

So I couldn't do anything with the computer, it would continually crash even when I started the computer, with in 5 seconds it would crash... So I got out my windows 7 64bit, and reinstalled it and to my dispare it has started showing similar early signs... I tried to open 3d mark vantage to test if it was working and straight away I get a BSOD once it opened the first test. 0X00000116, ATIKMPAG.SYS (refer to picture)... so I tried the test again and instead of getting a BSOD I got the display driver stopped responding... I've played a few games such as AOE and AOM but when I try Just course 2 or Fallout 3 it just crashes to the display driver...

But my computer, as I even type this message, is playing weird tricks, the 3 screens keep switching, like google chrome could be on the right monitor then it switches to the middle the back then to the left monitor after a quick black screen appears

I've tested my ram and the power supply , ram works fine and the power supply had no change to the error ( I hooked up a 500watt one straight to the graphics card) I've also tested the eyefinity, tried one screen, still the same errors, either a BSOD or Display driver crash..

I've tried a lot of googling, there is no concrete answers.. some say it's power other ram some a dud card, some say even opticle drives?!?!
Have I got a dud card?? (HIS 7950 @800Mhz and 1250Mhz) should i try and return it? only purchased 4 days ago..

sorry about the wall of text tongue.gif

ATIKMPAG.SYS 0x00000116 BSOD

This to me means you bricked your windows. But you did reformat, have you tried multiple drivers since your reformat? if you did, you may have bricked it again frown.gif

Thats all I got for ya, not much.

I don't believe your card is a dud, it's the drivers. I am getting the same crashes with my 7970s and eyefinity in bf3--I am on the 12.3 drivers. Reinstalled Windows fresh a few times to help rule out other reasons while troubleshooting and the bluescreen dumps always point to the same thing: amd drivers and directx. I hate to say this, but you're going to likely need to use the RC11 driver until they fix this in the 12.x driver. I think I am going to do the same. mad.gif

I'm running 7970s in CF and i have this atikmpag.sys extremely frustrating error too. So many ppl are in the same boat it is complete bs. Anyhow I know its a driver issue for sure because
changing driver versions changes the behavior.

It may be my windows which is behaving like a ***** the last weeks. I think I do a clean install and go on from there. I first have to wait for my BIOS chip replacement for my mobo tongue.gif It is wiped completely while flashing to a new version.

So they replaced it with a card that had cooling problems? Sounds like bad service to me, would not order anything again from there if I were you.
Good luck though, hope you get it sorted ! thumb.gif

Interesting that you traded in for the Asus CU II version.

Thats the one I got... no issues with temps/cooling.

But 1 BSOD every 2 days (3hrs/day use).

Didnt matter if I was gaming or browsing or watching youtube. Random occurrence.

1 corruted Windows install along the way.

eVGA GTX 680 and no issues now. (not meant as a troll). Owned a 6950 flashed to 6970 before this and would have loved to stay with AMD. But the BSOD that led me to reinstall everything was a *****.
