Critique My Build!

post #1 of 28
Thread Starter
Hey, guys.

I've been putting this build together for a while now, and I'm about to order my final few parts in one large batch. But before I do that, I would love to hear some opinions on my build. Do you see any flaws with my set-up, or would you recommend different parts? Let me know!

This rig is designed primarily to be a gaming-intensive system, but with enough room on the sidelines for some excessive hobbywork (i.e. graphics design, video encoding, perhaps even folding).

Note: GREEN parts have already been purchased, and are final. I can't change those. But I would definitely like to hear your critiques regarding the few RED, as-yet unordered parts!

So, without further ado:

=====================================

Core Elements:

Case: COOLER MASTER HAF-X

CPU: Intel i7-2600K

Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 WS-Revolution

I might catch a fair bit of flak for my motherboard choice, but I went with it because it easily fits my configuration.

Video Cards (2): EVGA GTX 580 3GB 2-way SLI

Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws X 16GB 1866

Sound Card: ASUS Xonar Essence STX

PSU: Corsair AX1200

Boot Drive: Crucial M4 64GB SSD

"Critical Program" Drive: Crucial M4 128GB SSD

Archiving Drive(s): Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB

I plan to get as many of these as I need.

=====================================

Peripherals:

Monitor: BenQ XL2420T

I'll probably buy one or two more of these down the road, but I'm just starting with one for now.

Speakers: HiVi M200MkIII

I'll probably add a subwoofer on later, as well.

Additional Fans for HAF-X:
Fan Controller: Undecided. Options:
Fan Filters: DEMCiflex HAF-X Filters

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14

BD/DVD-ROM Drive: ASUS Generic BD/DVD Burner

Thermal Paste: Arctic Cooling MX-4

=====================================

And here's the cooling configuration I plan to use (jacked from HardForum, credit goes to the guys over there):
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Note that I'm using a Noctua NH-D14 instead of the advertised H70 cooler.

Thanks for taking the time to read through this. Let me know what you think!

It all looks pretty darn good. Thats gonna be a sick rig. For sure. Although some might say a 1200W PSU is a "little" overkill it looks like money isn't a problem for you so I say go for it. Have fun with that setup. First build?

Thanks, man.

Yeah, 1200W is a bit overkill, but I figure having a little extra juice for future expansion never hurts. And yeah, it's my first build. biggrin.gif

you should get some of the individually sleeved cables for that AX 1200! They look great and the quality is really nice! I love the ax1200 white replacement cables i got!

The only thing i dont like is the case, have you seen the Switch810 by NZXT? It comes in white and black.

Really solid build!

Really nice board.

EDIT: Here are the cables http://www.corsair.com/power-supply-units/psu-accessories.html

EDIT: I also have that same lamptron fan controller, the touch, it is really good.

While you could get by with a smaller PSU, they are at their most efficient at about 50% of capacity - so you should be right in the sweetspot.
You'll like the AX series as well - quiet, modular (although you will be plugging everything in) and really nice cables.

While I love Cav Blacks (and have two in use now) I would say the Cav Blues might be a little better suited to just archiving (which is what I use mine for).

This will be a nice rig when done. Enjoy thumb.gif

Oh yeah! CPU Cooling! Duh. If your going with air I recommend the heck out of this setup: Artic Cooling MX-4, Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, and twin Cougar Vortex fans. This is my current setup and Prime 95 taps out at 52 C* on max heat. Love it. And thats with an inferno building BULLYDOZER.
Also for cases I would seriously look at these two and see if you like them any better. (I do) CASE 1 .... CASE 2

PS. Congrats on your first build. I'll be sure to follow you and keep updated on your build progress.

Thanks for the info on the sleeves, I'll check them out! And yeah, I chose the case a long time ago before I really knew, ah, anything. I'm planning on upgrading to a SilverStone Raven RV02B at some point down the road.

True that! Especially if your going to use that four stick kit. I doubt it will all fit. Besides you would probably be ok with two 8GB stick anyways.
