Corsair TX650 -- DOA after only 24 hours?

Brand new Corsair TX650 PSU...

Just got it from Newegg a few days ago, built the system last night, and powered it on for the first time last night...

PSU blew out tonight.

Exactly 24 hours after it was first powered on....

Unusual for those Corsair TX's ??

I've always used Thermaltake to be honest and never had problems with them; have had a Tt ToughPower 650 running another machine for the past 5 years now, and a Tt TR2-RX 850 running my primary build for the past 3 years....

The system in question is:

Phenom II x4 955
Asus 890GX Mobo
CM Hyper 212 Plus
G.Skill Ripjaws 8GB (4x2) DDR3-1600
Sapphire Radeon HD 5850
Razer Naga Epic
Logitech G110

No overlcocking on the CPU or the Vid Card, everything running at stock settings.

System ran through several runs of Heaven 2.5 and Vantage last night, as well as earlier today.

I built it for my girldfriend whose been gaming on a 5 year old laptop; and now tonight while in the middle of gaming on RIFT with her friends, the PSU just blows out. Sudden "POP" and the damned thing is dead...

I pulled my Tt 650 out of my other PC and put it into hers, and it powered up and seems to work fine...

So obviously this Corsair TX 650 is a lemon.

I can RMA it back to Newegg for a refund, but should replace it with an HX 650 instead of asking for another TX?

i think you got a lemon bro, it's highly unlikely for that to happen, specially corsairs. i have tx650 too which i have benn using for almost a year now, still going strong. see my sig rig.

I have a tx 650 and used it with a 580 for about 5 months before downgrading to a more power hungry card biggrin.gif ( i have my reasons), and it has held up extremely well. Sorry to say it but you did get a lemon. You should be able to return it to newegg for a full money refund if its under 30 day mark. It should give the options replace or full refund. I would take to a newegg representative and tell him what happened. They are very understanding. thumb.gif

Just goes to show that no matter who makes it, it can still be faulty. If it were me I would return it to newegg and get a thermal take PSU since they have treated you well. Same thing with me and Rosewill PSU's, they haven't let me down yet so I keep returning them for client and family member builds.

TX V2, right? I don't think they still stock the old TX650 or even the TX650-C now. Some of the other older TX series units are similar to the Thermaltake Toughpower 650W I think (IIRC the latter is CWT PSH as well), and the TR2 RX 850W sucks, not that it matters much since you're hardly tickling it with that kind of load.

TX650 V2 is a little better than the HX650, aside from the cabling. But if you just want a high-quality way-overkill unit, Rosewill Capstone 550W is cheaper at $80 and better. Or maybe just get Earthwatts Green 650W at $60 before rebate, which is solid enough (significantly higher quality than the Thermaltakes you own) but not better than the TX V2.

Yea, this is a TX650 V2...probably shoulda stated that, but was too tired when I posted... it was 3am after I pulled it outta her computer and tested with one of mine... then posted.

Newegg accepted the RMA instantly, for "full refund" but of course is insisting on a "restocking fee" ..which in my mind is unacceptable on a "DEAD" product. I'll have to call them about that as it was ordered on my Account and shipped to me; but since it was my girlfriends credit card that paid for the order, I suspect they'll want her to be the one who calls and asks to remove the fee...

Oh well; and thanks guys... given me a few things to think about today. She's the one whose weary of just having it replaced with an identical unit, and is instead thinking of going with a different brand...

That, after I told her all about how great a company Corsair is, and how wonderful their products are...

Try contacting Corsair directly. Thier warranty policy states:

"Corsair's entire liability and your exclusive remedy for any Corsair product that is not operating in accordance with its published technical specifications is at Corsair's discretion: 1) to repair or replace the product at Corsair’s expense , or 2) to refund the price paid less 10% of the purchase price for each year since the date of purchase. This warranty obligation is conditioned upon the hardware being returned to the original place of purchase, or another place as directed by Corsair, with the original sales receipt attached. You may be required to pay shipping and handling charges, as well as any applicable tariffs, duties, taxes, or other fees. Corsair may, at its discretion, provide new or equivalent-to-new refurbished parts in good working condition, or repair or replace the hardware returned to Corsair.

Any repaired or replacement hardware will be warranted for the remainder of the original warranty period or thirty (30) days, whichever is greater, or for the period of time required by local statute."

I would almost always contact the manufacturer about replacements/refunds before contacting the seller. Worst case scenario, they won't help you (highly unlikely). Best case scenario, you can tell newegg to eat thier restocking fee. tongue.gif

I would love to go straight to Corsair... and if it were my own computer I would.

But this is my girlfriends computer and she doesn't want to wait.

I told her that her options were:

1- RMA it through Corsair and wait for replacement to ship back...
2- RMA it with Newegg for Replacement, again wait for replacement to ship..
3- RMA it with Newegg for REFUND; and go buy a replacement locally ourselves; and thus have her computer back up and running quicker.

She chose option 3.

So tonight we're going out to Frys so she can buy a replacement herself, and she is insisting on getting the same that I use in my computers; which are Thermaltake.

I know generally Corsair ought be a better product; and I know some have qualms over the quality of Tt PSU's; but mine have never failed me, never hiccuped... they've even outlived the Enermax PSU's that I used to use, by a number of years!

So she's already picked out the Tr2-RX 650wt model... and we're probably going to go pick it up at the local Frys later tonight, they're offering a $20 rebate on it which will make it cheaper then the Refund shes getting from Newegg on the Corsair!

After I set it back up, I am going to put her power strip on a differenet wall outlet...

Oh and yes, you can bet I'll be telling Newegg that they can go eat their restocking fee!

I told you man, you should have talked to a newegg representative. I have had many restocking fees wavered by them, because i dont see any point in paying a restocking fee on a dead product either.. rolleyes.gif

A TX650 is more than enough for that rig even if the CPU and GPU was overclocked, so it's not like you were trying to get more power out of it than it could handle. I haven't had any problems with my TX650, I think you should contact Newegg and I'm sure they will send a new one.
