Need help with Crossfire-X setup (ATI Radeon 2 X HD 58xxx on P35 MOBO)

Hello guys,

I am running an Intel Core 2 QX 9650 extreme (Yorkfield) on a GA-P35-DS4 MOBO. I have been using one (1) ATI Radeon HD 5830 on this rig
with no issues whatsoever for about one year.

My MOBO supports Crossfire X:
Quote:
Multi-display support with ATI CrossFireX™
ATI® CrossFireX™ delivers the ultimate graphics performance for gaming enthusiasts who demand the highest frame rates without compromising on resolution.

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2745#ov

However, looking at ATI's latest Crossfire-X chart

http://sites.amd.com/PublishingImages/Public/Graphic_Illustrations/WebBannerJPEG/AMD_CrossfireX_Chart_1618W.jpg

...my MOBO Intel P35 chip is NOT listed at all. However, the similar Intel P 55 & P45 chips ARE actually listed.

Question is, am I going to be able to run 2x ATI Radeon HD 58xx on this MOBO even though my chip is NOT listed in their latest chart?

Also, is it better to use 2x 5830 or rather, 1x5870 and 1x5830 from a compatibility POV?

What do you guys think?

EDIT: The only Crossfire X compatibility chart with my MOBO chip on it listed I can find:

Not recommended with your existing board to Crossfire.

Hello Ken,

Many thanks for the helpful links. I did check my MOBO's page and saw that although my MOBO has got 2x PCI 16x slots, only one is 16x. The other one is x4.

To be more precise, here's a quote from my MOBO's page:
Quote:
2 x PCI Express x16 slots (The PCIE_16_1 slot supports x16; the PCIE_16_2 supports x4.)

Judging from what is written in the threads you linked, I am going to get inferior performance if I use Crossfire due to the fact that one of my 2 PCI slots only supports 4x.

Can somebody tell me if my MOBO supports the latest video cards from ATI, such as the 79xx series?

As this rig has got an excellent CPU that's running effortlessly at 4 GHz, I am thinking to keep it for another 2 years or so. I just want to get the best possible graphics performance for my MOBO.

I haven't seen anyone with 7900 series with your board. My guess is it will need BIOS update. But to be sure, raise a support ticket to Gibabyte. They will be able to confirm it as they make 7900 too.

Edit:

Yes I know the board only supports X16 and x4, hence why not recommended to Crossfire.
